Chapter 652
After the virus swept through, only a handful of families with the means to get medicine escaped relatively unscathed.
Almost every other household lost someone, even if the whole family wasn’t wiped out. Even those who survived long enough to get the antiviral treatment were left with serious aftereffects.
The Robinsons had reliable sources of information. With the smog and other disasters making conditions worse, several groups of survivors were already heading south.
Anyone willing to travel that far had probably run out of options back home. Once they reached the south, they were bound to compete with locals for food and supplies. But Westbridge didn’t have much to spare either. If too many people arrived at once, trouble was almost inevitable.
A notoriously corrupt official once said that refugees stopped being people.
It sounded ridiculous at the time. But after years of natural disasters, people were starting to understand the ugly reality behind those words.
No one had forgotten what the rioters were like during the polar night. If another wave came, could the villa district hold them off again?
Eric didn’t step in himself. Instead, he left the problem to his son.
“You’re not a little kid anymore. You chose to be HOA president, so start acting like one. Figure out what needs to be done.”
He was getting old. Who knew how many years he had left? If Marcus still couldn’t stand on his own by the time Eric died, Eric wasn’t sure he would ever rest easy.
Nicole’s medicinal herbs had helped, but most of the Robinson family still caught the virus. Eric survived, but one grandson and two granddaughters didn’t.
The family had plenty of younger generations, but losing a child was never something anyone got used to.
The strain took a heavy toll on Eric. He seemed to age almost overnight, and for the first time, death truly scared him.
Not because he was afraid to die, but because he was afraid of what would happen to the Robinsons once he was gone.
He had seen too many families fall apart after losing the one person holding everything together.
Eric lost his father when he was young and took on the burden of supporting the family early. He raised his younger siblings, fought his way up from nothing, and eventually built the Robinsons’ business empire.
He had held the family together for decades. He thought he would finally get to spend his later years in peace, only for the apocalypse to hit.
After years of surviving one disaster after another, Eric was exhausted almost beyond what he could bear. But he didn’t dare die. He was afraid that once he was gone, the authorities would stop giving the Robinsons any special consideration, and the gangs outside would stop thinking twice before targeting them.
