Chapter 657
Nicole smiled and pulled a piece of milk candy from her pocket.
Chris had never seen candy before. He looked at Lydia first and only took it after she nodded.
Treating children was different from treating adults. Nicole didn’t have much experience with pediatric cases, so she switched places with Mitchell.
Ever since the natural disasters began, survivors had struggled to get enough food and basic necessities. Many women of childbearing age had even stopped getting their periods, let alone been able to have children. The birth rate over the past several years had fallen frighteningly low.
Mitchell examined Chris carefully.
“Nothing serious. It’s just bloating. The heat can kill a child’s appetite, too. Give him foods that are easy to digest. If he doesn’t want to eat, don’t force him. Just offer smaller meals more often.”
The child was too young for needle therapy, so Mitchell had Nicole use therapeutic massage instead.
Lydia asked nervously, “Does he need medicine?”
Mitchell shook his head. “No. It’s not serious enough for that. Dr. Floyd will show you a few simple massage techniques. Try those first and keep an eye on him for the next few days.”
After showing Nicole which pressure points to use, he went back to work.
Nicole noticed the heat rash on Chris’s skin. “He’s dressed too warmly for this weather. That can make him feel worse, too. Just keep him in light, comfortable clothes.”
As she gently massaged the pressure points, she had Lydia watch closely so she could learn.
Chris seemed to be developing normally, but a child born during the apocalypse had grown up with too little food and too few resources. There was a limit to how healthy he could be.
The Goodmans lived better than most survivors, but not by much. Chris was malnourished, and he probably got sick often. Raising him had likely taken almost everything the family had.
Nicole went over a few common childhood illnesses with Lydia, along with basic ways to handle them and several simple massage techniques. How much Lydia could remember was up to her.
“How’s Gabrielle doing?”
“She’s gotten weaker over the past two years, but overall, she’s doing alright.”
Every family had its own problems, so Nicole didn’t ask any more.
By the time she finished the massage, Chris’s stomach was much less bloated. Lydia finally relaxed and reached into her bag for some grain.
