The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 658

Chapter 658

With the smog finally clearing, plenty of survivors had come back out to work, and the lobby of the square was packed shoulder to shoulder.

The nonstop public announcements only irritated everyone even more.

If they had enough food at home, who would choose to come out in this brutal heat just to scrape by? Anyone with a choice would rather be sitting comfortably at home.

Those announcements played every single day and did nothing but wear on people’s nerves. If the authorities really had resources to spare, people would’ve much rather seen a few ounces of relief grain.

Of course, they were afraid of acid rain. But what were they supposed to do? No one was handing them protective suits. No one was feeding them three meals a day.

Looking at the light drizzle outside, some people were practically cursing the sky. If it was going to rain, then just rain already!

Instead, the sky kept teasing them with a few drops here and a few more there.

Everyone grew more restless by the minute, but they still stayed packed inside the lobby and waited for more than half an hour.

Eventually, some of the bolder people decided the rain wasn’t corrosive, pulled plastic bags over their heads, and ran outside.

Once the first person left, another followed, then more and more.

The lobby gradually cleared as people hurried home or went back to work.

It was already late afternoon. With the rain disrupting everything, Nicole figured there probably wouldn’t be many more patients. She suggested packing up early. If the rain suddenly got heavier, they could be in trouble.

They had almost finished when a piercing scream came from outside.

Nicole looked up just as the drizzle turned into a downpour, pounding down on everyone still caught outside.

The moment the rain hit exposed skin, people screamed.

Faces, hands, arms. Anywhere the water touched began to burn.

Some instinctively threw up their arms to shield their faces, only for the skin there to start burning, too.

At first, the rain soaking through their clothes barely hurt. Then the fabric itself started breaking down. The pain began as scattered pinpricks before spreading into larger patches, until it felt like their whole bodies had been plunged into boiling water.
