Chapter 663
Nicole kept her eyes straight ahead, deliberately avoiding the shelters along the road. Even so, she caught sight of two teenagers outside a wooden shack from the corner of her eye.
They stood on top of a broken table, botli struggling to hold up a door they had ripped off its hinges to shield themselves from the acid rain.
There was no telling how long they had been standing there. Their arms and legs looked stiff, and their knees shook badly. They clearly couldn’t keep it up much longer.
They looked about Poppy’s age.
Nicole took a deep breath and kept walking.
The protective suit was too thick and bulky for her to sit down, so whenever she got tired, all she could do was stop and stand for a while. She didn’t even get a chance to eat lunch.
The trip was harder than she expected. After eight straight hours of walking, she had only just reached the border between the two cities. She wasn’t even halfway home, and evening had already fallen.
It got dark early in this kind of weather. She would probably have to find somewhere to spend the night.
Nicole looked around, hoping to find somewhere secluded enough to slip into her storage space without being seen.
She kept searching as she walked. About half an hour later, she spotted a lone thatched hut nearby. Judging by its battered roof, no one had lived there in a long time.
She was just about to head over when she noticed someone coming toward her from farther up the road. Through the gray curtain of rain, she couldn’t make out much.
Nicole stopped to rest, planning to wait until the person passed before heading to the hut. But as the figure drew closer, she realized he was wearing protective gear that looked a lot like hers.
Wait. Why did that suit look so familiar?
It looked like a man. A very tall one.
Nicole immediately grew wary and moved farther to the side, but the stranger kept walking straight toward her.
She stared at him in surprise. Their eyes met through the visors.
She never expected Zeph to come looking for her in the middle of the acid rain. They stood there facing each other in the downpour, neither looking away.
Nicole walked toward him, and Zeph opened his arms. They held each other tightly in the acid rain.
Nicole looked up at him. “Why did you come?”
“I was worried about you.”
