Nicole leaned against Zeph’s shoulder and told him everything she had been through lately, including how badly the acid rain had scarred and corroded the world outside.

Even Zeph, who had survived acid rain once before, didn’t expect it to be this severe. He couldn’t imagine what the world would look like if this kept up.

Nicole checked him over carefully and made sure he really wasn’t hurt.

“Did you get burned by the acid rain last time?”

“Yeah, but I found shelter pretty quickly.”

His arms and face got hit. He simply endured the burns, and after they healed, they left plenty of pitted scars behind.

This time, things had gone much better. Even Poppy and Cola stayed home like they were supposed to.

“They’re both fine. We didn’t need any of the medicine you left.”

That was the best possible outcome.

Nicole wrapped her arms around Zeph’s neck. “You’ve worked hard while I’ve been away.”

He was actually fine. He was just feeling a little neglected lately, so he took the chance to ask, “You’ve been studying all this time. Have you finally learned everything?”

“Huh?” Nicole didn’t get it at first, but the moment it clicked, she immediately felt embarrassed.

Exhausted, the two of them sank into the soft bed and quickly fell asleep.

Early the next morning, Nicole was still half asleep when Zeph gently woke her.

“We should get going.”

She forced her heavy eyelids open and realized it was barely past 5 a.m. It wasn’t even light outside yet.

Still, she got up, brushed her teeth, washed her face, and ate breakfast. Then she put on the bulky protective suit and left the storage space with Zeph.

By 6 a.m., the sky was only beginning to brighten, and visibility was still poor.

It was still raining, though not nearly as hard as before. The road was so quiet that all they could hear was the steady patter of rain.

Since they still couldn’t see very far, Zeph walked in front and kept Nicole behind him.
