After ten hours on foot, Nicole and Zeph finally made it through the acid rain and got home.

With the rain still pouring down, the neighborhood had gone quiet again. Everyone stayed inside, too scared to go out.

The rain itself was only part of the problem. Soil and water contamination would come next. If those problems weren’t dealt with, the neighborhood would probably fall into chaos soon.

As if he knew what she was thinking, Zeph said, “Marcus thinks ahead. He warned everyone over the radio a few days ago to stock up on water.”

But no matter how much they stored, it wouldn’t last forever. Contamination wasn’t something they could solve overnight.

Curious, Nicole asked, “How did you deal with it last time?”

Zeph thought for a moment. “The authorities drilled deep wells and pumped up groundwater. They filtered it before anyone drank it.”

He was working within the government system back then, so the relevant departments handled those problems. As for how ordinary survivors managed, he honestly had no idea.

All he knew was that the contaminated soil never became usable for planting again before the massive tectonic

collision hit.

When they reached Villa 50, Zeph hadn’t even opened the door before Cola’s excited whining came from the second floor.

He had smelled them.

Nicole finally relaxed. After more than 20 miles through the acid rain, she was home.

The moment the door opened, Cola came charging down the stairs and nearly launched himself at her.

Nicole immediately shouted, “Stop!”

She rinsed off the protective suit, took it off, and hung it up before finally wrapping her arms around Cola.

“I’m back!”

“Nicole!”

Poppy rushed over next. The two of them crowded around Nicole, leaving Zeph standing off to the side.

He rubbed his nose and asked, “Everything okay at home?”

Poppy threw herself into her brother’s arms. “Yeah! Cola and I ate well every day.”

After spending so long with Nicole, Poppy had become a pretty good cook. She made sure they had proper meals every day and took good care of Ash, Snowy, and the others, too.
