Unsurprisingly, the father-son duo failed miserably.
In the end, they gave up on trying anything complicated and just threw the meat on the grill. Nicole still had to step in and handle the seasoning.
There was plenty of meat sizzling on the grill, smoky and fragrant. Marcus, however, was unusually quiet. Instead of bragging nonstop like he normally did, he just kept eating in silence.
Once he had filled his stomach a little, he started raising his glass to Nicole and the others.
"Come on. Here's to you and Zeph. And you too, Sven. If it weren't for you guys... Anyway, you know what I mean. Cheers."
He downed three glasses in a row, then kept drinking until he finally lifted the bottle straight to his mouth.
And that was hard liquor.
Sven could tell something was weighing on him, so he didn't try to stop him.
Satellites were still falling from the sky. One moment, they could be sitting around eating meat and drinking together, and the next, they might be crushed to death.
The survivors left on Earth were like rats hiding in their holes just to stay alive. The moment they stuck their heads out, there was always a chance the sky itself would come crashing down like a giant hammer and smash them flat.
After years of living under that kind of pressure, it was a miracle any of them were still sane.
Sven was already frustrated himself, so he started drinking, too. Before long, his words began to slur. He hiccupped and stared ahead with a distant, melancholy look.
"Zeph, Nicole, do you think these disasters are ever going to end?"
Neither Zeph nor Nicole answered. Neither of them knew.
Nicole knocked back two glasses of whiskey. "I hope they do someday."
"When do you think the satellites will stop falling?" Sven took another swig straight from the bottle. "And even if they do, what's waiting for us after that?"
The conversation was getting so depressing that even Nicole started to feel weighed down by it.
"Who cares what's next? If we can survive, we'll survive. If we can't, then I just hope it's quick."
Better to be crushed instantly than slowly eaten away by acid rain, or end up like Jason, trapped in a paralyzed body and unable to properly live or die.
Marcus dragged a hand through his hair, looking like a drunk husky. "So how do you wanna die?"
