Chapter 68
The living room in Hughie’s place was spacious.
They shut all the doors and windows tight.
Soon, the rich, bold aroma of the stew filled the room as it came to a boil. Everyone gathered around, smiles spreading across their faces. Just the smell alone had them swallowing hard.
Nicole added the ribs and sliced pork to the stew, letting them simmer.
“This is heaven,” Jeremy said, burning his tongue on a pork slice. “Tender and packed with flavor.”
No one held back after that and dug in quickly.
Zeph scooped up some ingredients and placed them in Poppy’s plate.
Beatrice teased, “So, Poppy, is Nicole a better cook than your brother?”
Poppy glanced at Zeph, then smiled sweetly. “Zeph cooks well, too.”
Yeah, right. Everyone knew his cooking was nothing like his looks. Even Hughie could do better.
“Where’s Cola?” Jeremy asked, looking around.
“At home,” Nicole replied, still eating.
“Bring him here,” Beatrice said. “He’s one of us now.”
She liked the dog.
“And he’s amazing. The second something moves downstairs, he knows. Like he’s got super hearing.”
Cola was full of energy, too. Hughie alone wasn’t a match for him, and even adding Jeremy wouldn’t help.
“With him guarding, we can finally sleep without worrying,” Beatrice continued.
Poppy nodded eagerly; she liked Cola as well. Everyone was on board with bringing him here.
They would have to split responsibilities going forward. No one could be treated differently.
Nicole hesitated for a second, then nodded.
“Alright.”
She opened the door and called Cola over.
He came trotting in, carrying his food bowl in his mouth. Poppy picked up a rib and secretly fed it to him.
They enjoyed the camp stew together. It was rich, savory, and comforting.
Jeremy cracked open a few cans of beer. “Come on. This is the first real meal we’ve had in forever. Let’s celebrate.”
Everyone got a can.
Poppy had soda, while Cola got bone broth.
“Woof!”
Hughie took a sip and let out a long sigh. “If it weren’t for the flood downstairs, you’d never think the world’s

gone to hell, considering how well we’re eating.”
Jeremy raised his can. “Look ahead. As long as we stick together, we’ll keep having nights like this.”
Once most of the meat was gone, they added seaweed and squash to the pot.
The squash was from Nicole. It kept well and lasted for months. The mushrooms were rich and flavorful, lingering on the tongue.
The greens were even better. Just a quick dip in the broth, and they were tender and fresh.
None of them had eaten vegetables since the storm hit. Now, they devoured them as if they had been starving.
“If it weren’t for Nicole, I’d forget what vegetables even taste like,” Hughie said.
“That nutrient solution we brought back works great,” Nicole added. “The greens grow fast. We won’t run out.”
That got everyone excited.
You can’t beat some greens. They just make you feel better.
