With barely any medicine and almost nothing to eat, Zeph had somehow survived for more than ten days. Even the strongest person couldn't keep going like that forever.

Nicole took good care of him, closely monitoring his condition and adjusting his medication as needed.

He was still too weak for anything heavy, so she kept his meals light and balanced, with fruit, milk, eggs, and other easy-to-digest foods.

After two more days of recovery, Zeph still couldn't stop worrying about Poppy.

Nicole had no choice but to take him and Cola out of the storage space.

Even with masks on, the stench around the cave was overwhelming. Rotting bodies lay everywhere.

Nicole and Zeph covered their noses and mouths while Cola stayed close beside them as they carefully made their way outside.

Zeph had injured both his thigh and lower back, so there was no way he could walk. But after the sandstorm and heavy rain, there was no realistic way to get a car back there either.

With both Zeph and Cola injured, Nicole didn't want to risk running into trouble while trying to bring them back.

She found another secluded spot and hid Zeph and Cola there, leaving them food, water, and weapons.

"Wait here. I'll go get Poppy."

Zeph's injuries were serious, and he would need a long time to recover.

"Be careful," he reminded her.

Nicole had already been gone for five days, and she was worried about Poppy, too, so she hurried back as fast as she could.

The rain had stopped and the sun was out, making the roads much easier to travel.

Walking would take too long, so Nicole pulled a rusty bicycle from her storage space and pedaled hard toward the rescue area.

The ride was rough, but after pushing herself the entire way, she finally made it back.

The rescue area was already being taken down, and many of the survivors had left.

Only then did Nicole learn that Glenmere had officially ended its rescue operation several days earlier. The extra days were simply meant to give the survivors some time to recover.

Now that the mission was over, the rescue teams were preparing to leave.

Glenmere's authorities were only responsible for emergency relief. What the survivors chose to do next was up to them.
