Zeph rolled down the window. "What's wrong?"

Two men stood beside the vehicle. One looked to be in his fifties and wore a crisp military uniform. His stern, square face carried an air of authority, and the insignia on his shoulders made it obvious he held a high rank.

The younger soldier beside him was probably his aide.

The aide, Simon Booth, noticed Zeph's helmet and immediately grew cautious, but he still approached politely.

"Hello. Do you know anything about fixing cars?"

"A little. Nothing complicated."

Simon nodded. "We're from the military base, and we need to get back there urgently. We'd like to use your vehicle."

Zeph shook his head. "Sorry. It's our only car, and my family's inside."

Simon looked frustrated. "Could you at least give us a ride? The base will compensate you with supplies."

Zeph had no idea who these people really were, so there was no way he was letting them into the SUV. "There's no room. If you want, I can take a look at your vehicle instead."

Simon glanced at his superior, Arthur Hunt. After Arthur nodded, he agreed. "We'd appreciate that."

Zeph got out and walked over to their vehicle.

Nicole didn't feel comfortable letting him go alone, so she had Poppy move into the driver's seat while she got out, too. She didn't go any closer. Instead, she stayed beside their SUV and quietly watched every move the men made.

Arthur glanced her way. A flicker of surprise crossed his face, but it disappeared almost immediately.

Zeph spoke with Simon for a few minutes while he worked on the vehicle, then returned to their SUV and opened the trunk to look for spare parts.

They really were from the military base, and judging by the officer's rank, he was probably one of the higher-ups.

Zeph decided to help. He wasn't expecting any special treatment, but making a good impression couldn't hurt.

One of the brake parts had failed. Zeph remembered that he and Nicole had collected plenty of spare auto parts from the car modification club, so he was sure they had what he needed.
