Chapter 78

Nicole carried the child upstairs and refused to let the parents follow.

She worked on pressure points first, then used needle therapy. The pain eased quite a bit. Before sending the child back, she reminded the parents to boil their water before drinking it and, if possible, use purification tablets.

She tossed the gold ring into her storage space. Sure enough, after a while, it was gone.

That only made her more certain. Treating patients was a safe way to gather supplies. There was no need to risk going outside, and some of the items in her storage space could pass through this method without raising suspicion.

The flood dragged on. Life settled into a routine.

After finishing training Cola, Zeph saw Nicole open her door, drenched in sweat. “Wanna spar?”

She paused. Of course, she wanted to go up against someone that skilled, but wasn’t he worried about her playing dirty again this time?

“Sure.”

If he wasn’t afraid, why should she be?

Zeph had learned his lesson. “Poppy, take Cola out to play.”

Nicole had cleared out the living room, moving unnecessary things aside. It felt more open now.

They started sparring. This time, both of them were more controlled.

Knowing how skilled he was, Nicole didn’t hold back. She aimed straight for weak points, mixing in feints to throw him off.

A flicker of surprise passed through Zeph’s eyes. “Your style’s all over the place.”

Nicole knew that. She had never mastered any one system. Her moves were messy, adapted on the fly. In her past life, she had picked up whatever worked, especially the more ruthless tricks.

As they fought, Zeph could feel it. The way she carried herself now was nothing like her usual self.

It reminded him of the day she had cut off that man’s arm. There was something sharp and dangerous in her.

He found himself appreciating it.

At the same time, he pointed out flaws in her movements, adjusting her form as they went.

“Do you train on your own every day?” Nicole asked, picking up more than she expected. “We should do this more often.”

They sparred for two hours. She was better than he had thought.

Zeph wiped the sweat from his face. “Yeah. We can.”

The next day, when Poppy came over, she even brought her own food: a pack of noodles and a few eggs. With a free coach like that, Nicole wasn’t about to say no.

By the time Zeph brought Cola back, the egg and veggie noodles were already done.

“The eggs are starting to go bad,” Nicole said as she sat down to eat. “If you don’t have many, finish them soon. If

you can’t, you can preserve them.”

Zeph thought for a moment. “How?”

“Wipe the shells clean with some strong vodka, roll them in salt, then wrap them up and seal them tight.” Nicole kept eating as she talked. “Also, Poppy’s got some eczema. You should put something on it.”

There were plenty of meds, but all the packaging had been removed. Zeph wasn’t sure which was which. “Thanks. Please help me find it later.”

Nicole had cooked, so Zeph washed the dishes without being asked.

They went through the pile of medicine for a while before finding the right one. Nicole applied it to Poppy herself.

“Don’t scratch it,” she said. “If it breaks the skin, it might scar.”
