The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 79

Chapter 79

Nicole stepped into the kitchen to help. She picked up a clean egg, dipped it into a bowl of vodka, then rolled it through salt before wrapping it tightly in plastic.

“Let it sit for a month, and it’ll be ready.”

She was just about to take a nap when someone knocked on the door.

Zeph and Hughie’s group were heading out. Even Poppy had a raincoat on.

Zeph wanted to take Cola and Poppy out for some real-world training. Cola was already bouncing with excitement. Nicole thought it over, then didn’t stop them.

“Wait.”

She went back inside, grabbed her makeup kit, and picked out a few darker shades, brushing them onto Poppy’s face.

Letting Poppy see how harsh the world was mattered, but she looked too soft and clean. Going out like that would make her a target.

Nicole kept working until Poppy’s face looked dull and worn. Only then did she stop, satisfied.

Cola shoved his face over, whining. He wanted makeup, too.

Yeah, right.

With that dark brown coat, he already looked rough enough.

Feeling personally offended, Cola huffed and stomped off with his trainer without even looking back.

After her nap, Nicole got ready to do another needle treatment for Gabrielle.

Gabrielle pulled out a roasted sweet potato wrapped in layers of cloth from her pocket. “My back’s feeling a lot better. Thank you so much.”

The sweet potato was still warm.

Nicole shook her head. “I already charged you. Keep it.”

Food was survival. She wasn’t about to take that from someone else.

Gabrielle clearly wanted to get closer, insisting on giving it to her, when loud knocking suddenly echoed from downstairs.

“I appreciate it,” Nicole said, pushing it back, “but if you really want to give me something, you can use it for future treatments.”

The knocking kept going. After a while, someone started shouting.

“Girl on the 18th floor, I need medical treatment. Open the door!”

With a voice that loud, how sick could she be?

Annoyed by the noise, Nicole went downstairs. “What’s wrong with you?”

A woman in her late forties rushed to greet her with a forced smile. “You’re Dr. Floyd, right?”

“I’m not a doctor. Just a med student.”

“Well, I’ve got a headache and a fever. Can you take a look?”

“I charge for treatment.”

The woman’s smile froze. “What? It’s just a headache and a fever. Just give me a couple of pills.”

“When you go to a store, do you not pay?” Nicole said flatly. “I don’t have medicine here. I can’t treat you.”

“No medicine? Then just… Stick a couple of needles in me or something.”

“I can. That’ll be about five pounds of food.”

“What? It doesn’t cost you anything to use needles. Why should I pay five pounds of food?”

The woman’s voice shot up as she started yelling.

“I’m telling you, young lady, that’s not very nice of you. We’re all neighbors; we should help each other. You’ve got all these supplies and won’t share, and now, you’re taking food people need to survive? That’s just cold!”

Nicole opened the door and pulled out a blade. “Say that again.”

“Wh-what are you doing? Are you trying to kill someone?” The woman jumped back, panicked. “I’ve got connections at the police station. If you touch me, you’ll be sorry!”

Her voice grated, loud enough to make Nicole’s ears ring.
