Chapter 83
Everyone looked worn out except Zeph. Poppy still had tears clinging to her lashes, her face pale, as if she had just seen something terrible.
No one spoke. The three men moved in sync, hauling the water tank.
Nicole put away the boat and picked up a bundle of firewood, heading upstairs. Beatrice walked ahead of her, stumbling as if she might fall.
Nicole’s hands were full, so she leaned in and steadied Beatrice with her shoulder.
They kept climbing. Something about Beatrice’s steps was off. She was favoring one leg. Nicole even caught the faint smell of blood.
Did something happen out there?
There were eyes everywhere in the building. Now wasn’t the time to show weakness. The moment people sensed the 18th floor slipping, they would swarm like starving dogs.
They made it back up.
Beatrice dropped the firewood in the hallway, her face tight with pain.
Nicole helped her inside. “What happened?”
There was a wound on Beatrice’s calf. Blood had soaked through the bandage.
It wasn’t a knife cut or a bullet, but a puncture.
Beatrice gritted her teeth. “Boar.”
Nicole frowned. “You went into the hills?”
“What choice did we have?” Beatrice let out a bitter laugh. “Everything we need is underwater. People are starving out there. On the way today, we saw bodies being thrown out of buildings. More than one. We might last seven or eight months, but supplies are getting harder to find. What happens after that?”
The water tanks weren’t even the main goal this time.
They went deep into the hills. After crossing several ridges, Cola found a whole group of wild boars: five big ones.
They made the call on the spot and decided to take them down.
Nicole felt her chest tighten. “Wild boars aren’t like farm ones. They’re aggressive.”
They knew that, but meat meant survival. It didn’t matter how dangerous it was.
Nicole pulled out gauze and antiseptic, then dug out her surgical tools and sutures.
“The wound’s deep. It’s going to be hard to stop the bleeding. You want me to stitch it, or should we try a hospital? ” she asked.
“It’s fine. Just stitch it,” Beatrice said.
Beatrice didn’t think much of it. She had taken hits worse than this in training. Going to a hospital wouldn’t help, anyway. They probably didn’t have any meds left.
Nicole had stocked up on anesthetic before. She cleaned the wound, numbed the area, and then started stitching.

It was her first time working on a person, but she had practiced on meat enough times. Her hands stayed steady.
Hughie, on the other hand, looked like he might pass out. He held Beatrice’s hand tightly. “Nicole, her life’s in your hands.”
Beatrice shoved him. “You’re crushing my hand.”
Jeremy rolled his eyes. “Cut it out.”
Beatrice wasn’t the only one hurt Jeremy and Hughie had a few scrapes, but nothing serious.
Zeph had a cut on his arm, blood still seeping out, but he acted like it was nothing. He stayed beside Poppy, calming her down as she cried.
The hills were slick from the rain. Beatrice had taken down one boar with her bare hands, but got caught by its
tusk.
