Chapter 111 Hugo’s Gamble
Third-person POV:

At the same time, inside the top-level conference hall at the military, all the senior officers of the empire had gathered.
Every person in the room held a rank of General or higher, from the three Grand Marshals all the way down.
“General Stanton,” one of the Grand Marshals began, his voice deep and steady, “if I remember correctly. the planning for Sector Six hasn’t made much progress since the congress approved it.”
He narrowed his eyes. “The congress invested a huge amount of funding to support you. If there’s still no progress, we would have trouble explaining it to the congress and Lycan King.”
Tony Lawson, one of the three Grand Marshals, stared straight at Hugo as he spoke.
Hugo drew his brows tight. He stood up, spine straight, and saluted. “Yes, sir! I understand. The personnel are being arranged. Please rest assured, Grand Marshal. Sector Six’s Wolffang Unit will be ready for duty very soon!”
A low chuckle came from across the table. “I don’t think General Stanton’s preparations are going very smoothly,” another general said with a hint of mockery.
He looked Hugo up and down with open disdain. “Why don’t you let me handle it instead? Falcon Unit is filled with top-tier talent. Picking a few capable soldiers wouldn’t be difficult.”
He had a buzz cut, a square jaw, and a harsh face that made him look strict and sharp all at once.
“And I’ve heard,” he added coldly, “that General Stanton has been choosing, let’s say, unconventional recruits. Choosing the wrong people could put our empire in serious danger. And whether they can even handle the responsibilities-well, that’s questionable.”
He leaned forward slightly. “Remember, our empire already has elite units trained for years. General Stanton, are you sure your picks can outperform the elite soldiers?”
This man was Lonnie Bell, a general.
He also oversees the Falcon Unit, an anti-terror elite force that is armed with heavy firepower.
Their specialized gear and their ability to take down high-risk targets made them one of the strongest and most expensive special units in the empire.
Because of that, Lonnie had always hated Hugo’s proposal and looked down on the Wolffang Unit from the
start.
Why waste money on a new team when his Falcon Unit already existed?
And worse, the higher-up had approved Hugo’s proposal and handed him enormous authority because of it. It was something Lonnie couldn’t accept.
“Lonnie has a point.” Several generals nodded in agreement.

“General Stanton is young,” another added. “It’s good for young men to have energy and ambition. But to claim he can find talent stronger than our special forces or the Falcon Unit, that’s a little stretch.”
The room shifted into open discussion.
Some supported Hugo. Others stayed doubtful.
Hugo raised his voice, firm and unwavering. “Please trust me. I will give the military, the congress, and the Lycan King a result that satisfies everyone!” His words filled the hall with the force of a promise.
Lonnie let out a cold laugh. “Since General Stanton insists, then we’ll wait and see.”
He crossed his arms, a smug spark in his eyes. There was no way a young man who was barely 25 years old like Hugo could find talent stronger than his unit.
When the meeting finally ended, Hugo stormed out of the building. He couldn’t hold back his frustration. “Darn it! That Lonnie is always trying to mess with me! Think he’s all that just because he commands the Falcon Unit? Wait until I get Thora on my team. She’s worth more than ten Falcons!”
He planted his hands on his hips and paced back and forth, fuming.
“Motherfucker, why is this Thora so hard to deal with?!”
He wanted to trust her. He really did. But Lonnie’s words hit the weak spot. Hugo needed to think about the safety of the empire and the Lycan King.
And he could feel it; Thora didn’t have loyalty to either of them. Everything she did came from instinct, not
commitment.
Worse, she was surrounded by dangerous people. If things ever spun out of control, he couldn’t imagine it.
There was Shirley-the girl that top leaders had personally banned from carrying firearms. He had once tried to recruit her, but Shirley didn’t even bother replying, like she didn’t think his army was worth her time.
She was young, but every force across the empire had her name on their danger list.
Even so, many units removed her kill-on-sight order and tried to recruit her instead.
If snipers had ranks, Shirley would be S-plus. The entire Astralis region might not have a second sniper like her.
Her classified file stated Shirley once stayed hidden in the same spot for five days and five nights, just to fire a single shot.
That wasn’t just skill. That was endurance and patience far beyond most elite snipers.
Hugo had been nervous when he offered her a place back then. Now, even though Thora was the one leading her in, he still felt uneasy.
Because Shirley’s danger level matched her abilities, both were S-plus.

Then there was Luke, the computer genius.

Hugo had met him on the day Astralis College was attacked. Later, he tried talking to Luke, Harvey, and Ashton, but all three didn’t even bother listening. They treated a General like him as nothing.
It showed they never planned to join the army. Worse, every single one of them had a difficult personality.
