Chapter 131 A Gamble
Third-person POV:
About three miles from Wolffang Base, inside the special-ops office.
Hugo held a coffee cup, his eyes glued to the surveillance monitors.

Ever since the Wolffang Unit was formed, a special monitoring team has been set up. Their main responsibility was to observe the Wolffang members and gather all related data. They tracked stats, training, and even adjusted gear to keep everyone in peak condition.
This monitoring crew was the only group with full access to the members’ identities and detailed records.
“How’s it looking?” Hugo asked.
“General.”
The officer on surveillance was Hugo’s direct subordinate. He jumped up, saluted, and reported, “On the first day at the base, the rookies ran into some veterans. Minor injuries all around. Everyone held back- except Shirley.”
Hugo felt his stomach twist. Bad vibes all at once. “What did Shirley do?”
“Her wolf spirit went berserk,” the officer said carefully. “In the chaos, she grabbed a rock and slashed a veteran’s tendon. Medics got to him fast, or he would’ve been permanently disabled.”
“What?!” Hugo cursed under his breath. “First day here, and she’s already causing chaos? That girl is insane! Pull up the footage. Now!”
“Right away, General!”
Hugo rested his hands on his hips, glaring at the screen, patience running thin.
The footage showed Thora’s four teammates just arriving at the base when the veterans started provoking
them.
The vets expected the rookies to back down. They didn count on such a strong pushback. Things quickly spiraled into a full-on fight.
Veterans had years of real combat under their belts, so they were way ahead of the rookies in skill. Except for Harvey, the other three rookies were clearly outmatched.
Then there was Tristan-he fought like a living weapon Promoted to Major General at a young age, his strength wasn’t hype.
Nobody expected a simple skirmish to nearly turn deadly because of Shirley,
Fistfights weren’t exactly allowed in the military, but off duty scraps were mostly tolerated. Most held back, but Shirley didn’t. She went all in.
“Damn it! How could I forget about this ticking time bomb?” Hugo muttered.
Shirley’s wolf spirit had always been unstable. Her risk assessment had flagged her during recruitment.
He turned to the officer. “What’s her current status?”

“The veteran she hurt is Alger Hoffman, our demolition expert. He’s been treated and should recover fine in the short term.”
Tension at the base had split into two camps over the past two days. Rookies and veterans eyed each other constantly, and sparks were flying nonstop.
The veterans rallied around Tristan. Harvey and Ashtons group was weaker and getting schooled by the veterans every day.
Hugo rubbed his temples, feeling a throbbing headache
He’d expected clashes when mixing skilled fighters, but hat was beyond what he imagined.
Wolffang veterans were elite experts in their fields, constantly facing life-or-death situations. They naturally doubted the rookies brought in through special recruitment and even looked down on them.
To make both sides work together naturally, Hugo kept the veterans in the dark about the rookies’ true skills and identities. Likewise, the rookies had no idea how capable the veterans really were.
“Where’s Shirley now?” Hugo asked deeply.
“As you said, the second her wolf spirit acts up or she gets aggressive, we step in immediately. For now, she’s locked up in the base’s detention room.”
On the screens, Harvey was picking another fight with one of the veterans, and it was going fast. Hugo rubbed at the tight pain in his temples as he watched. “Stick to the plan. Keep your eyes on the base, and report anything the moment it happens.”
“Yes, General!”
