When Yereah said “artificial werewolf,” he meant a lifefon created through gene-editing and cloning.

This tech had been banned across Astralis and most empires. It was unethical and came with huge risks of genetic mutations that no one could control.

“Impossible,” Darius said immediately.

Yercah smirked. “I was just talking. With what we have now, there’s no way anyone could create someone as perfect as Thora.”

Then he leaned forward, dropping his playful tone. “Are you sure you want to get involved? Messing with those people is asking for trouble.”

Darius let out a cold laugh. The pressure of a top Alpha olled off him, sharp and overwhelming. “They went after my mate. There’s no way I’m staying out of this. And this is Astralis-my territory. I don’t like troublemakers here.”

The chill in his voice sent a shiver crawling up the spine of anyone listening.

Yereah shuddered, changing the subject. “By the way, Marlon woke up yesterday. You must really care about Silverleaf Pack. You even sent the royal guard to protect him. If I hadn’t visited the Royal Estate, I wouldn’t have recognized them.”

Darius gave him a calm look. “General Green is a national hero. Of course we protect him.”

“Yes, yes, Mr. Blackwood. Whatever you say.”

But Yereah knew the truth; Darius did all this because of Thora.

Once they finished talking business, Yereah got up and left.

As soon as the door shut, Darius spoke quietly. “Carl, arrange people to watch over Thora from the shadows.”

“Understood, Alpha.”

Darius frowned as he looked at the shredded papers scattered in the trash. The words “artificial werewolf” lingered in his mind, refusing to fade.

Two days later, Darius went to Clearwave Sanatorium himself.

It also happened to be the day of Hazel and Caleb’s engagement party.

The moment he stepped into the room, Marlon-sitting in a wheelchair-spoke without turning. “You’re

here.”

He kept looking out the window, as if he already knew exactly who had walked in.

“I suppose I should call you Marlon,” Darius said with a molite smile.

Marlon slowly turned toward him. Darius gave a respectful nod.

Despite the cloudiness in Marlon’s eyes, there was a sharp, piercing judgment in them.

After confirming Darius showed no cracks, did Marlon finally let out a quiet sigh. “I thought I would never wake up again. I know, if it weren’t for you, Darius, I-”

Darius cut him off. “Thora visited you two days ago. You were already awake. Why did you hide it from her?”

Marlon was thunderstruck. He stared out the window again.

Outside, the night sky was pitch-black.

Darius narrowed his eyes. “Or is there something else you’re hiding from her?”

Marlon stayed silent for a long moment. Then he said quietly, “It seems like you’ve figured it out.”

Darius slid one hand into his pocket and took a slow step forward. A faint smile touched his lips. “Thora isn’t Norman’s daughter. You know that, don’t you? And you also know who her real father is.”

The sudden question hit Marlon hard. He froze, eyebrows pulling tight. “Where did you hear that from? Thora is my granddaughter. She’s a Greens!”

Darius didn’t argue. He simply smiled.

The sharp intelligence in his eyes left no room to hide.

“Who her father is doesn’t matter to me,” Darius said.

He shifted his gaze toward the window, his smile fading. “What matters is that whatever your family is hiding, I don’t want Thora getting hurt because of it.

“I don’t know what you have been covering all these years,” he added quietly. “But someone has already started digging. If people higher up weren’t secretly watching your family, none of you would live peacefully like you do now.”

Marlon’s face went pale.

Neither of them named that person, but both knew exactly who Darius meant.

“You’ll protect her, won’t you?” Marlon asked.

Darius’s voice carried more certainty than doubt. “Of course.”

He faced Marlon. His tone was firm, every word steady. You don’t want to talk about it, and that’s fine. The first person who deserves the truth is Thora.”

Marlon fell silent. After a while, he said, “I have my reasons. Everything I’ve done is for her own good.”

He paused, then continued, voice softer, “I want her to live like a normal girl. No fear. No burdens. Chase whatever she believes in and become whoever she wants to be, nothing more.”

Darius narrowed his eyes slightly, but he said nothing.

The room fell into a heavy silence.

At last, Darius spoke again. “If everything you do is truly for her benefit, then I won’t push further.”

He broke the silence and gave a small smile. “And if I remember correctly, today is your granddaughter’s mating pact ceremony with the Argenvale Pack.”
