Chapter 286 How Heartless
Valen’s face grew even colder when he heard that.

He grabbed the rating sheet and snorted. “What’s so impressive about this? Every year, plenty of people get S ratings in the first round.”
Jeremy replied, “…Yeah.”
Even so, that candidate still deserved close attention.
“Roxen and Mike are both here, right?” Valen asked as he stood up and adjusted his uniform, ready to head to the second-round testing site.
“They’ve already arrived,” Jeremy replied.
Valen nodded, his tone firm. “Since they’ve got nothing better to do, let them act as executioners. Start from round two.”
Executioners were supervisors for the assessments. They dealt with candidates who killed recklessly or seriously broke Blue Star Military Academy rules. In extreme cases, they were allowed to execute offenders on the spot.
Jeremy snapped to attention and saluted. “Yes, sir!”
Once they left the first-round testing area, the magnetic field suppressing wolf power disappeared. The werewolf candidates reconnected with their wolf spirits.
“Ugh! Why did they block me out?! I couldn’t even take the test with you. That’s so unfair!” The moment the link returned, Amie complained loudly in Thora’s mind.
Thora calmed her through the mind link. “It was only the first round.”
That meant there would be more chances for them to fight together.
“Fine,” Amie replied, barely satisfied. She flicked her tail, then warned, “Thora, I sense hostile eyes in several directions. Stay sharp.”
“Mm,” Thora answered coolly.
She had already noticed the curious, wary, even unfriendly gazes sweeping the plaza. After all, she was part of the first group to pass.
But everyone was exhausted after the first round. Even with their wolf power back, no one wanted to start trouble right now.
The candidates gathered in open areas to recover-treating injuries, replenishing stamina, each busy with
their own stuff.
Their gear included rations, water, bandages, and standard military supplies, all simple to use.

Chapter 286 How Heartless
Many of them were already soldiers, so it came naturally.
“Ugh, this tastes terrible. What is this?”
A woman’s voice suddenly drew attention.

She was young and pretty, not even 20. Her wolf power felt weak, and she looked pampered and fragile.
Several burly men with strong wolf power stood around her, speaking politely, clearly acting as her guards.
“Ms. Campbell, please just bear with it. It’s compressed biscuit. Everyone is eating it. Otherwise, there won’t be any food,” one of them coaxed.
The young woman looked disgusted, but she had no choice and forced herself to eat.
Thora and the others noticed the scene and treated it like a show. They didn’t dwell on it, though they were curious how someone like her had passed the first round.
Ashley took a big step, squeezed past Tristan, and sat down beside Thora.
Tristan bristled instantly, shooting her a cold glare. Since she was a woman, he held himself back.
She has no shame!
“Wondering how someone like that made it through?” Ashley asked, chewing on a biscuit and tilting her chin toward the spoiled-looking woman.
Thora raised an eyebrow, saying nothing.
“She’s not the only one,” Ashley said with a grin, her eyes shifting elsewhere.
Thora followed Ashley’s gaze. In a corner, another pretty woman clung to a tall man. Even when he openly touched her chest, she only smiled sweetly and acted shy.
“No matter where you go, people like that exist. They might not be strong, but they use their looks or other advantages to pass the tests and enter the academy.”
“Getting in is their ability,” Thora replied evenly.
She didn’t oppose methods like that, as long as they worked.
Everyone had their own strengths. If those strengths carried them forward, then even if they weren’t admirable, they were still valid.
Modern military roles had long moved past relying only on raw combat power. Diverse skills and strong personal traits were far more useful in special operations-like Luke and Shirley, who were both brilliant in their own fields.
In her previous life, long before Thora became the first female Alpha commander during the apocalypse, she had already been an exceptional strategist.
She knew what an army needed and what special units needed even more.
