Draven did not answer Thora’s question. He simply stood in front of her, eyes locked on hers. “Aren’t you the least bit curious?”
“Curious about what?” Thora shot back.
Draven’s lips pressed into a thin line. He gave no reply.
Thora went on, “Curious about your connection with Darius, or maybe why you’re afraid of thunderstorms?”
Draven’s eyes went even colder.
“Why should I care?” Thora’s lips curled slightly, her voice flat. “Things that don’t concern me aren’t worth my attention.”
“Don’t concern you?” Draven repeated, his tone low.
A flicker of confusion flashed in Thora’s eyes. “Do you really think there’s something between us?”
She didn’t bother to continue the conversation. She got up and looked around, searching for something to
eat.
She needed to regain her strength and gather the map fragments to get off this island. She couldn’t waste any more time.
“What about Darius?” Draven’s voice followed her, gaze fixed on her face, unwilling to let any expression slip by.
Thora adjusted her clothes, answering as casually as if she were talking about eating dinner or taking a shower. “He’s my lawful mate.”
With that one sentence, she drew a clear boundary, placing Draven as a total outsider.
But the corners of Draven’s lips lifted ever so slightly. His gloved fingers twitched.
Just as Thora was about to step away, Draven blocked her with his arm.
“For you.”
She frowned at the food in his hand, then glanced at him. His silver mask covered most of his face, revealing nothing. For a split second, a strange doubt flashed through her mind.
“Your backpack was soaked in the swamp, and the food inside absorbed toxic gases from it. You can’t eat it. That’s why I’m giving you this,” Draven explained, a faint smile on his lips.
Thora took the food and looked away. “You really should keep that mask on. Don’t ever take it off again. Otherwise, with a face identical to Darius’s-”
She trailed off and started walking.
What she didn’t say out loud was that even though she knew they were completely different people, for one

second, she’d caught Darius’s scent on Draven. For just that instant, she’d almost mistaken him for Darius.
Beneath the mask, Draven’s brow creased. He lifted his hand as if to take off the mask, but his fingers hovered in midair froze. In the end, he let his hand fall and quietly followed her.
At daybreak, the battle for map fragments on the island was as fierce as ever.
About 12 miles from the center of the island, a lump covered in green plants crawled out of the brush.
Once it sat cross-legged, it became clear it was actually a person-Luke.
He pushed the grass off his head and dug a laptop from his backpack.
The test rules forbade communication devices and electronics, but when the academy inspected his computer and found nothing special, they let him bring it.
After all, the candidates all had different talents and came from different species. The academy tried to be flexible and accommodating.
Luke opened his computer, yanked out the signal antenna, and started typing at lightning speed.
He glanced at a hidden camera nearby. A glint flashed in his eyes behind his glasses.
For someone like him, fighting for number tags wasn’t his strong suit.
