Thora’s POV:

Darius looked at me with deep, unreadable eyes-part curious, part puzzled-until whatever was on his mind faded from his face.
He didn’t say a word. He just cut a small piece of the apple and held it toward me.
“Eat.”
That bossy tone made me push back. “No.”
He stared at me for a moment, then suddenly smiled brightly. “Come on, be good. Patients should eat more fruit-”
His voice was always nice to listen to, but with that sweet tone, it was almost too much to handle.
A chill ran down my back. His sudden change caught me off guard.
A top-tier Alpha talking to me like that? Seriously …
I glanced at the apple again. This time, I didn’t say no. I took it and bit into it.
His smile grew wider.
I looked away from his amused look, feeling a bit uneasy. “How are Harvey and the others?”
Darius leaned back on the sofa, looking relaxed. “You mean the ones who picked up weapons and fought with Greywolf?”
“Yeah.”
I honestly had no idea how they were doing.
Back then, with them working with Shirley, they should’ve been able to stop the mercenaries from getting into the library. And the military had already shown up. Logically, they should be safe.
“You’re not worried about yourself-or me-but them?” Darius touched the spot under his collarbone where he was hurt. “Don’t forget, I’m a patient, too.”
“You’re fine, aren’t you?”
I looked at where his shirt was open on purpose. The cut under his collarbone was just a pale pink now. “It’s getting better. Won’t even leave a scar.”
Darius was speechless.
“I told you, if I could pull them out of that underground market alive, I would bring them back alive.”
I looked straight into his eyes, my voice firm. “I won’t let anything happen to them.”
He looked at me for a while, then let out a soft laugh. “You haven’t changed at all.”

After a moment, he added, “They’re fine. Even if someone got hurt, no one’s in danger. Except one person who’s not doing so well.”
My brow furrowed. I said without thinking, “Shirley.”
“That’s right,” Darius said.
He gave that calm smile again. “The Astralis Empire put a permanent gun ban on Shirley. Normally, when she sneaks one around, no one says anything as long as she doesn’t get caught. But this time everyone saw her with a gun. Even if she saved Astralis College and earned some credit, she’ll still have to face the military
court.”
I frowned. “If anyone should face the military court, it’s me. I’m the one who gave her the gun and told her to shoot.”
“You’re usually smart. Why play dumb now?” Darius said with a teasing grin.
I looked at him, confused.
He explained, “Shirley’s dad isn’t some ordinary man. And she saved the academy. Even if she goes to military court, they’ll probably go easy on her. They might even use it as a reason to end her gun ban.”
Darius tapped the sofa arm, his sharp eyes locking on me. “But there’s one problem. Shirley needs someone to keep an eye on her. Her antisocial behavior has to stay under control. You know her wolf spirit is unstable, and that’s part of what makes her dangerous.”
I lowered my gaze, thinking.
Back at school, Luke once said Shirley was one of the best snipers. He also mentioned her antisocial side and her unstable wolf spirit.
She’s talented-but also a ticking bomb.
“I’ve got official work to take care of. Can’t keep looking after you.”
As he spoke, Darius picked up my phone from the side table and did something on it. His tone turned light and a little playful. “If you miss me, just call.”
I looked at him, confused.
Looking after me?
What exactly had he done to look after me?
He put the phone down and started to walk away. But after two steps, he turned back.
I was about to ask, Aren’t you leaving? -but his tall frame suddenly leaned in, surrounding me in his scent.
That familiar cedarwood note made me freeze.
