Chapter 40

Ravenswood Apartments.
This was Lucian’s third visit.
Yet, it was the first time he experienced such deep unease upon arriving here. He followed me inside
My eyes were red and swollen, but I had calmed down. I stopped at the side bedroom door, looked at Lucian, and opened in
“Go ahead. Aurora’s ashes and death certificate are inside.” Just as I was about to push the door, Lucian’s phone rang.
The familiar ringtone made both of us pause. It was Ayla.
Lucian slightly frowned but took out his phone and answered in front of me.
As soon as he picked up, Ayla spoke excitedly, “Lucian, I saw Aurora.”
I stood close to him. I heard this too. Ayla said she saw Aurora. I was stunned.
My grip on the door handle loosened. I instinctively turned to run out. But I stopped after one step. The brief hope in my eyes faded.
How could Ayla have seen Aurora? Aurora was dead.
The panic in Lucian’s eyes vanished because of Ayla’s call. He saw how I reacted, and his look turned cold.
“Make sure Aurora doesn’t leave. I’ll come right away.” He hung up and started to leave.
As he passed me, he stopped and said coldly, “Seren, Aurora’s biggest misfortune was being your daughter.”
Without another glance, he walked away.
I stood still, biting my lips hard, my body shaking uncontrollably.
Lucian’s last words felt like a sharp knife stabbing my heart.
He was right. Aurora’s biggest misfortune was being my daughter.
I was unloved, and my daughter lived in a loveless family just because of me.
