Chapter 169 The Ambush in the Safe Zone
Crispin also thought Herbert was useless. The skeletons Herbert summoned were nothing but cannon fodder.
Soon, Crispin, Keith, Perry, and Alfie formed a team.
After seeing the news online, they all bought black cloaks to hide their identities.
“Joanna’s idea is actually perfect,” one of them said with a laugh. “It makes it easy for us to ambush her. Hit her and run.”
“Let’s go.”
“Agreed. I strike first.”
“No problem. You get ten minutes. After that, I move.”
After making their plan, the four used teleportation and arrived at the plaza.
Alfie moved close to Joanna, then suddenly attacked.
It was a staff technique.
The staff cut through the air with a loud whistle. The strike came so fast that many people could not react in time.
But Joanna had mastered blind counterattacks. The moment someone got close, her body responded on instinct.
The Crimson Throne slid sideways, pulling her out of danger. The staff smashed into the ground instead, cracking the gold-brick floor and leaving a deep crater.
At the same time, Joanna’s Venomcoil Whip lashed out.
Lash Purgatory!
Perfect timing. She wanted to test her skill and wanted to find out who the attacker
was.

In an instant, Joanna’s mental domain expanded and dragged Alfie inside the whipping realm.
Alfie’s vision blurred. The next moment, he was no longer in the Golden-tier safe zone. He stood in a gray, lifeless world. He was tied to an execution rack. Bones lay scattered everywhere. The scene was terrifying.
Shit! Did I get attacked by a wraith? Was it because I damaged the gold floor just now? Did that give it an opening?”
Fear flooded his mind.
He tried to struggle, but then he realized something worse. His body was small. It looked like he was only eight years old.
A shadow appeared on the ground ahead.
“Meow.”
It was a Persian cat.
Alfie froze. Then, his face turned pale.
The white cat had mismatched eyes and a bell around its neck. It looked exactly like the cat he had killed when he was eight.
Back then, he lived in an orphanage and was in first grade. One of his classmates came from a wealthy family and had a pet just like this. She loved showing it off. Even the food the cat ate was better than what Alfie got at the orphanage.
Out of jealousy, Alfie befriended the girl. He went to her house, let the cat loose, pretended to help search for it, then beat it to death with a stick.
That was why he liked using staffs. After becoming a monk, he even felt proud, believing it was fate.
But now, the white cat twisted into something monstrous. Its tail turned into a massive whip and lashed down on him.
“AAAAAARGHH!”

The pain was unbearable. He screamed.
Then, someone appeared beside the cat.
An old man.
A scavenger, Alfie had once been beaten to death over half a nutrition bar.
Next came a young man. After Alfie awakened his SSS-rank talent, he fought another man over a girlfriend and killed him. Because of his rare talent, the Space Alliance ruled it as a mutual fight.
Now, the cat, the old man, and the young man all held whips. They began to strike him together.
At least, his body changed again. He was 18 now, with his SSS-rank talent restored. Golden light rose around him, blocking damage.
He thought wraiths would fear this. They didn’t.
The whipping only grew more violent.
The white cat, the old man, and the young man showed no emotion. They swung their whips again and again for a full hour.
The next second, his vision shook. He was back in the Gate of Hell safe zone. Joanna stood right in front of him.
But his mind was already shattered by pain. He rolled on the ground, screaming.
