Sophia said yes, but the second Belinda walked out, she pulled a face behind her back.

Catherine couldn’t get the image out of her head. Adelina had taken Lance’s arm, leading him to the dining table, the two of them sitting so close together. It replayed in her mind over and over again.
She should never have looked.
The cold air outside helped her clear her thoughts as she drove home. Halfway there, she stopped for a bowl of warm porridge, just to have something comforting before heading back to her empty apartment.
For the next few days, she couldn’t escape the news about Lance and Adelina. Everywhere she looked, it was their names, their photos, their so-called love story. It was exhausting.
But what really got to her was the silence about her resignation. Nothing had moved forward.
She called Lisa in HR, someone she’d always gotten along with, hoping for an update.
Lisa was confused. She hadn’t heard a thing about Catherine leaving.
That didn’t make sense. As the assistant to the HR manager, Lisa would definitely know if Catherine’s resignation was in the works.
If Lisa didn’t know, it meant one thing—Lance hadn’t signed off on it.
Annoyed, Catherine pressed her foot on the gas and drove straight to SilverLeaf Industries headquarters.
She picked the worst time. Lance was in a meeting.
Someone from the secretarial team showed her to a conference room to wait.
About half an hour later, Adelina walked in. She had a limited-edition purse hanging off her arm, flawless makeup, cheeks glowing. She laughed and joked with the secretaries, totally at ease, looking every bit like the future boss’s wife.
Right before she stepped into Lance’s office, Adelina glanced over and spotted Catherine sitting in the waiting room.
She waved Shirley, one of the secretaries, over. “What’s going on with her?”
“Catherine’s here to see Mr. James, but she didn’t make an appointment, so she has to wait,” Shirley replied, her smile a little too eager.
Adelina fiddled with her nails, her eyes sharp as she whispered something to Shirley.
A few minutes later, Shirley came back into the room.
“Catherine, you should head home. Mr. James doesn’t have time to see you today.”
Catherine looked straight at her. “His meeting isn’t over yet. I’m guessing he didn’t say that.”
Shirley was caught off guard and didn’t know what to say.
The east conference room was tucked away in a corner. Lance would never pass by it on his way back to his office. She’d have no chance of running into him there.
She sat down, pulled out her phone, and sent a message.
Letty, let me know when Lance is back in his office.
Letty had started at the same time as Shirley, but they couldn’t have been more different. Shirley always sucked up to the higher-ups and had tried to cozy up to Catherine before, but Catherine never really let her in.
Letty was different. She was steady, hardworking, and didn’t play games. Catherine liked her much more, and they’d gotten close.
Letty sent back a quick thumbs-up emoji.
There was a stack of work waiting for Catherine from the branch office. She got caught up in it and lost track of time.
Before she knew it, it was already noon.
The conference room door opened, and Letty hurried in, looking apologetic.
“Catherine, Lance went to lunch on the sixth floor with Ms. Green. I wasn’t at my desk when his meeting ended, so I missed him.”
Catherine shut her laptop, slid it into her briefcase, and headed for the door. “It’s okay. If I go down now, I might still catch him.”
