Sophia clicked her tongue, shot them a glare, and nudged Fiona’s arm.
“Grandma, what’s Mom up to now?”
Fiona barely opened her eyes. “She can do whatever she wants. Catherine’s never coming back, so even if your mom tried to marry Lance off to a donkey, I honestly wouldn’t care.”
Sophia sat up straighter, leaning in close. “That’s not gonna work. If my sister-in-law turns out to be a donkey, the James family’s next generation will have donkey genes. Imagine how hard people would laugh at us.”
Fiona gave her a sharp look. “Cut it out with the jokes. I told you to keep an eye on Catherine and Gavin. Any news?”
“They’re… doing fine, I guess. I’ll tell you more when I get the chance.”
Sophia had been swamped lately. The last time she looked into Gavin and Catherine was back when they both left for Solenia, one after the other.
Fiona let out a long sigh. “I’ll try to get a feel for what the Main family is thinking, but I doubt they’ll just let Catherine in that easily.”
“I heard the Main family’s full of snobs. Hopefully, if Catherine has a baby, it’ll give her some leverage,” Sophia said, thinking there’s no way they’d ignore their own blood.
It was a whole new life, after all.
The two of them were still talking when the sound of a car engine drifted in from outside.
In the harsh headlights, Lance’s figure slowly came into focus.
He stepped into the villa, slipped off his coat, and hung it over his arm as he strode in.
When he made it to the living room and saw Adelina’s red-rimmed eyes, the hard look on his face softened a little.
“Still crying?”
As soon as he said that, tears welled up in Adelina’s eyes again.
“How could she not?” Belinda grabbed a tissue and gently wiped Adelina’s tears. “You saw how nasty those articles were. You owe Adelina a real answer today.”
Lance tossed his coat aside and sat down next to Adelina on the sofa.
“What kind of answer do you want?”
Fiona let out another sigh and got up, grabbing her cane. “Lance, help me back to my room.”
“I’ll do it…” Sophia started to follow, but when Fiona gave her a look that said “don’t even think about it,” she quickly changed her mind. “Actually, I’m going to bed too.”
Lance stood, told Adelina to get some rest, then helped Fiona toward her room.
The rest of them drifted away, heading to their own rooms.
When they reached the door, Fiona shook off Lance’s hand.
“Lance, your mom is selling you out, and you’re just helping her count the money.”
Lance opened the door and turned on the light. “Don’t worry. I know what I’m doing.”
Fiona snorted. “Do you? If you really did, would you be letting go of someone like Catherine just to get engaged to Adelina?”
Lance caught her meaning right away. He lowered his voice. “You should know, Catherine and I are divorced.”
