“It’s really not convenient.” Catherine shook her head slowly. “Sorry.”
“It’s okay.” Lewis kept his eyes on her.
Michelle hadn’t mentioned Catherine’s transfer to logistics, but everyone knew Catherine was beautiful, a top graduate from a prestigious university, and had made a name for herself as a secretary. All of that just made Lewis more curious about her.
“I don’t really care what my partner does for work. If we get along, that’s what matters most.”
Catherine hadn’t expected that. She pressed her lips together. “Sorry, I’m just not looking to date right now.”
Lewis gave her a small smile. “Then maybe we can start as friends.”
“I just don’t think we’re a good match.”
“You can’t really know that without even talking, Catherine.” Lewis sounded calm, but there was a persistence in his voice. He clearly wanted to get closer.
Catherine had no choice but to lie. “I have a boyfriend.”
Lewis looked surprised for a second. “So you really don’t think much of me, huh? Excuse after excuse.”
“Sorry.” Catherine’s head was starting to ache. “I…”
“It’s fine.” Lewis paused, pulled out his phone, and opened up his social media. “If you don’t mind, let’s at least be friends.”
Catherine quickly took out her own phone so they could add each other.
She left without even touching her lunch.
Back at the office, she messaged Michelle, using her demotion as an excuse for why she wasn’t a good fit for Lewis, hoping Michelle would drop the whole matchmaking thing.
After all that, she didn’t even get a warm meal. She just grabbed a sandwich from downstairs to keep herself going.
She spent the whole afternoon working, writing until her fingers were cramping, but she finally finished all the invitations.
The next day, Catherine was sent out to deliver them.
She went straight to find Fiona.
“Grandma, what’s up with Gavin? He’s avoiding Catherine. Is he just going to ghost her and not take any responsibility?”
Fiona’s face turned sour. “I knew it. There’s not a single decent one in the Main family.”
Sophia was frantic. “How did Catherine ever end up with him?”
“That Main family boy is notorious for causing trouble, always picking fights with Lance. He probably only went after Catherine to get at Lance. Now that she’s been demoted and he can’t use her anymore, he’s just walking away.”
Fiona put the pieces together in no time.
Sophia sucked in a sharp breath. “This is all Lance’s fault! If Gavin dares to dump Catherine, I’ll make Lance marry her and be a dad to her kid!”
“Don’t talk nonsense,” Fiona snapped. “Lance isn’t even worthy of her.”
