Lance’s sharp features looked even more striking on camera, his eyes filled with a depth and tenderness you rarely see. Adelina leaned into him, her smile radiant, the kind that only comes from pure happiness.
Guests paused in front of the photos, admiring them and whispering praise. Getting engaged to Lance was the fastest and surest way for Adelina to shake off those old rumors about her looks and finally stand tall. Now that she was about to become Lance’s fiancée, all anyone could do was envy her. Who would dare say anything bad about Adelina now?
The engagement party was about to start and everyone had arrived.
Catherine spotted Gavin across the room. He was impossible to miss in a light pink suit, shiny white shoes, and hair so perfectly slicked back it looked like it belonged in a magazine. He moved through the crowd like he owned the place, completely at ease.
Before Catherine could slip away, he was suddenly standing right next to her.
This time, he didn’t avoid her. He walked right up and said, “Relax, I changed my mind. I’m not doing anything.”
Catherine eyed him, not sure if she should be relieved or more worried. She could handle him making noise. What scared her was the idea of him quietly causing trouble.
He caught her look and smirked. “Don’t give me that face. Honestly, the real fun starts when Lance gets engaged.”
You could see Gavin practically enjoying the chaos in his head. To him, the idea of Lance getting engaged, then rumors about a secret baby coming out, was just the kind of drama he lived for.
Catherine looked away, shaking her head. “Sure, whatever you say.” She felt a mix of exasperation and amusement at how fast he could flip from scheming to harmless.
At least he wasn’t planning anything now. This engagement party needed to be perfect. All eyes were on Lance and Adelina tonight.
Tomorrow, Catherine would talk to her boss about quitting. She was finally leaving.
“Catherine!” Shirley ran over, out of breath, pointing upstairs. “Adelina wants you to come up.”
Adelina was getting her makeup done in the room upstairs. There were only five minutes left before the ceremony.
“Is something wrong?” Catherine asked.
Shirley rolled her eyes. “Just go, will you? Stop asking so many questions.” The jealousy was obvious on her face, like she thought Catherine was about to get some massive stroke of luck. But with Adelina, when did luck ever run Catherine’s way?
Adelina paused, then held out her arm. Catherine stepped forward, taking her arm and supporting her down the hallway toward the stairs.
“See now, Catherine? That’s how much Lance loves me,” Adelina whispered, her smile polite for the crowd but her words meant for Catherine alone. “You were with him for two years, but you were nothing more than a distraction. He’d never give you a real place in his life.”
Catherine kept her head down, letting Adelina’s words wash over her.
At the bottom of the big curved staircase, Lance was waiting in a black suit that fit him perfectly. He looked up, his sculpted face impossible to ignore. His eyes were deep and unreadable. When his gaze flicked over Catherine, she felt a chill run through her. When he looked at Adelina, his expression softened, full of warmth.
“You don’t deserve to stand by his side in public,” Adelina whispered, then pulled her arm away. She flashed Catherine a smug smile, lifted her dress, and started down the stairs.
Catherine watched her go, her own eyes calm and steady. Light music played in the background as she turned to leave.
Suddenly, a sharp gasp cut through the air. In the next instant, someone yanked Catherine’s hair. Her body pitched forward, completely out of her control, straight toward the stairs.
