The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 135

The elevator chimed and the doors slid open.

Aaron stepped out and took his place next to Catherine. “Belinda, Sarah, Lance needs to see Catherine right now.”

“That can wait. We’re taking her to the hospital,” Belinda said, barely listening to Sarah as she reached for Catherine’s other arm.

Aaron stepped in smoothly, blocking Belinda. He gently but firmly pried Sarah’s hand off Catherine’s wrist too.

“Lance wants to see her. I’ll take her up,” he said, planting himself in front of Catherine and giving her a quick, secret wave to get inside.

Catherine didn’t hesitate. She turned and slipped into the elevator.

“Move!” Belinda shouted, trying to press the button to stop the doors, but Aaron held her back.

The doors closed. The elevator glided upward, straight to the top floor.

Inside the tight, silent space, Catherine looked down at her slightly rounded belly. Her brow knit with worry. Any day now, someone would notice. She couldn’t hide it much longer.

...

Ten minutes earlier, in the CEO’s office.

Fiona banged her palm on the desk. “Can’t you see? Your mother and the Green family will never accept Catherine.”

“Is work all you ever think about? You’re engaged to Adelina. You can’t keep your ex-wife hanging around.”

Lance sat, unmoved, his face blank except for a slow, tense furrow between his brows as Fiona scolded him.

“Fine. If you insist on keeping her close, at least keep her safe. All this trouble she’s in? It started with you.” Fiona slapped the desk again, her frustration clear.

Sophia stepped up to gently pat the old woman’s back, nodding at Lance. “Grandma’s right.”

As they sat, Sophia whispered, “With Lance acting like this, he’s not going to help Catherine. What do we do?”

“Wait and see. I have an idea,” Fiona whispered back, giving Sophia a reassuring look.

They had just settled in when Lance called out for Catherine to enter.

She pushed open the door and stepped in. The familiar scent of the office hit her, bringing back memories that felt like a lifetime ago. Since leaving the elevator, she’d been drifting, her mind tangled up. But seeing Lance’s face, sharp and distant, snapped her back to the present.

She straightened her back and walked in, her voice steady. “Lance, you wanted to see me.”

He looked at her, eyes cold and unreadable, but there was something deep and dark flickering there.

“If this is about Adelina, I have nothing to say,” Catherine said quietly. She could feel his gaze, searching her, waiting for her to break.
