"You think the baby's Lance's? No way. Even if she's pregnant, it can't have been more than a few months, and it's almost a year since her and Lance split up."
Adelina didn't really know. She was just guessing.
"Who else could it be, though? Besides Lance, what other guy is even in Catherine's life?" She figured, since Catherine had been married to Lance, her standards must be sky-high now. Sure, Catherine met plenty of successful business types, but none of them could really compare to Lance. And honestly, Adelina just didn't buy that Catherine was over the divorce.
If Catherine had nothing to hide, why was she hiding her pregnancy?
"Wasn't she pretty close to Gavin for a while, though?"
Sarah wasn't all that shocked. She'd picked up on something before, especially after running into Catherine at that baby store. When she'd first suspected Catherine was pregnant, her first thought was Lance, but then she talked herself out of it. Lance just wasn't the kind of guy to keep messing with his ex after a divorce.
"Yeah, it's got to be either Lance or Gavin," Adelina said, finally feeling a little less anxious now that she had another possible suspect in mind.
"Catherine's probably planning to have the baby in secret and then use it to get herself back into a powerful family. What if the baby's really Lance's…"
Sarah cut her off right away. "No way. If they hadn't accidentally slept together, Lance wouldn't have married Catherine in the first place. You're the one he cares about, not her!"
Adelina almost said something but bit her tongue at the last second.
"Mom, things between me and Lance are complicated right now. Please, just trust me on this. We have to find out who the baby's father is. You have to look into Catherine for me."
Sarah had never seen Adelina this freaked out before. "Are you seriously doubting your relationship with Lance?"
"Mom, please," Adelina said, her voice trembling with frustration. "Just do what I asked. If you don't, things could get really ugly."
Catherine slumped onto the couch, staring at the tiny baby sleeping peacefully in the bassinet. Her hand drifted to her stomach, trying to picture what the little one growing inside her might look like.
She could say no to a paternity test. But the James family was powerful. Could she really stand up to them?
"Hopefully, I'll have enough money saved up before the baby's born. I can quit my job and get out of Cabinda then."
Lorinda nodded. "But if the baby comes out looking exactly like Lance, you won't be able to run, even if you want to."
Just thinking about it made it hard to breathe. Catherine rubbed her forehead. "Amanda told me to get rid of the baby."
"She's lost her mind," Lorinda snapped. "What's wrong with that woman? Acts like she's all about kindness, but her mouth is poison."
