The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 188

Gavin’s ridiculously good-looking face was plastered with a hopeful smile.

“Gavin.” Catherine slipped her hand out of his, her voice cool. “Did you need something?”

Gavin grinned, trying to play it off. “I just wanted to say sorry. I mean, sure, I was mostly watching things unfold, but I did help you out, didn’t I? With that whole Adelina mess, wasn’t it me who—”

“Thank you.”

Catherine cut him off, heading down a couple steps to put some space between them.

“If you feel like a thank you doesn’t cover it, maybe you shouldn’t help me at all.”

Because honestly, a thank you was all she had to give. She had nothing else for Gavin, and she knew it.

Gavin picked up on her meaning and looked even more awkward. “Yeah, I know, I probably shouldn’t have just watched from the sidelines. But come on, if there’s drama, who wouldn’t want to see what happens? Wait, don’t just walk away!”

He trailed off as Catherine turned and left without another word.

“Hey, slow down, will you? Watch your step…”

Catherine didn’t look back, moving quickly toward the parking lot. Gavin watched her go, feeling a little useless, then finally turned to head back inside, clicking his tongue in frustration.

He actually did feel bad about how things had gone down. He’d have to find another way to make it up to her someday…

“Gavin, what did you do to Catherine this time?”

Sophia had seen everything and stormed over, glaring.

Gavin jumped. “Geez, where did you even come from?”

“Listen up. If you ever mess with Catherine again, you’ll have to answer to me.” Sophia wasn’t usually one to get in the middle, but she couldn’t stand by and do nothing. “Our grandparents love her, you know. If you keep this up, you’ll be making an enemy of the whole James family.”

Gavin rolled his eyes. “Wait, is that why you’ve been digging into my business lately? You thought I was picking on Catherine?”

“Whatever her reason is, let’s respect it. Next time, just invite her for a simple meal. Don’t put her in this kind of situation again.”

Fiona didn’t mention Catherine’s pregnancy.

Before their mood could sink any lower, the lounge door opened.

Lance stepped in first. “Grandpa, Grandma.”

Adelina followed, forcing a bright smile. “Sorry we’re late.”

She set a gift box in front of Ableson. “Grandpa, happy birthday. Wishing you happiness and a long life.”

Hearing the familiar birthday greeting, Ableson responded automatically, “That’s so thoughtful of you, Catherine. You didn’t have to bring a gift.”

The name slipped out before he realized it. In that instant, Adelina froze, her smile faltering.
