Lance’s eyes landed right on Lewis, not missing a beat.
He just said, “Really? I don’t know.”
Then he turned and headed out.
“It’s all anyone’s talking about at the office. Don’t tell me you’re really out of the loop, Lance?”
Adelina rushed to catch up with him.
No matter what she said, Lance kept his answers short.
“I don’t know.” “Not sure.” “Really?”
A few minutes later, they were in the car.
Catherine started the engine and merged into the flow of traffic.
The car was quiet. A faint mix of smoke and alcohol from Lance slowly filled the space.
He sat by the window, eyes following the blur of city lights outside.
“Catherine.”
Adelina broke the silence first.
Catherine glanced in the rearview mirror. “What’s up, Adelina?”
“I heard you’re seeing someone from NextGen Technologies. Is it true?”
Adelina watched Lance’s face, trying to catch his reaction.
Catherine hadn’t expected such a direct question.
Catching Adelina’s sneaky glances at Lance, Catherine paused before saying, “It’s not like that yet.”
Her answer was vague, but to Adelina, it sounded like she was trying to deny something.
“So you mean, you’re just not ready to tell everyone?”
At the stoplight, Catherine pressed the brakes.
A few seconds passed. Just before the light turned green, she answered softly, “Yeah.”
Adelina flashed a satisfied smile. She got the answer she wanted.
What she didn’t expect was that Adelina went home and posted a picture of Lewis in the company group chat, announcing that he was Catherine’s boyfriend.
The group chat blew up. Hundreds of messages flooded in, everyone talking about how perfect she and Lewis were together.
Of course, the consensus was that they were a great match.
The next morning, the first thing Catherine saw was a message from Michelle.
[You’re dating Lewis? How could you not tell me something so big? Didn’t you say you liked someone else before?]
[I knew it! That was just an excuse, wasn’t it? Did Lewis win you over that fast?]
Catherine stared at her phone, totally confused.
It wasn’t until she checked the work group chat, where she’d been tagged a bunch of times, that she saw what Adelina had started the night before.
Adelina had even posted a photo of Lewis.
She had taken Catherine’s vague reply and just decided for everyone that the two of them were a couple, only waiting to go public.
[Don’t keep your relationships a secret like Catherine. Lance is super chill. When Catherine gets married, Lance and I will give her a massive wedding gift.]
