The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 217

Aaron was the one keeping Lance company at dinner that night.

When Catherine finished dropping Lewis off, the rain was coming down even harder. Up ahead, a chain-reaction accident had stopped traffic. She didn’t dare risk it on those slick roads, so she pulled over, figuring she’d wait until the storm calmed down a little.

That was when Lance called.

She picked up just as an ambulance and a couple of police cars went screaming past. Sirens drowned out whatever Lance was trying to say.

“Lance?” Catherine called out when the noise finally faded.

“Where are you?” His voice was low and steady.

“On my way home.”

Lance glanced out the window at the sheets of rain pouring down, his eyes growing even darker.

“Pull over.”

“There’s been a crash up ahead. I’m already on the side of the road,” Catherine said quietly. She could tell from his tone that this wasn’t about work.

“Gavin called Adolf. He wants Lewis fired,” Lance said, straight to the point.

Catherine stared at her own reflection in the car window, frowning so hard her whole face felt tense.

“Why would Gavin do that?”

Lance didn’t know exactly what was going on between her and Gavin, but he knew something wasn’t right.

“Catherine, don’t let your personal life mess with work again. This is the first and last time,” Lance said, his voice suddenly cold. “I’ll handle it for you.”

Before she could even react, he hung up. All she could do was sit there, listening to the empty dial tone.

Was he saying he’d stop Adolf from firing Lewis? For her?

“Don’t panic yet,” Adolf told him, then explained he’d already reached out to Lance. “You’re lucky Catherine’s on your side. Treat her well, okay? And remember, we work for Lance now.”

It was pretty clear what Adolf meant. Lewis needed to stick close to Catherine, and Adolf would stick close to Lance.

Lewis nodded right away. “Don’t worry, Adolf. I promise—I’ll treat Catherine right.”

By the time Catherine finally got home, it was ten o’clock and she was half-soaked. The rain had made the night feel colder. She warmed up with a hot shower, then made herself some ginger tea with brown sugar.

It was almost midnight when she finally crawled into bed. There was a message from Lewis, sent almost an hour before. First, he asked if she got home safe. Then he mentioned what happened with Gavin.

I have no idea what I did to Gavin, but I guess I owe you again.

Don’t thank me. It was Lance who helped you out. He and Gavin pretend to get along, but they’re not on good terms.

Even though Lance only stepped in because of her, Catherine didn’t want Lewis to think she’d done anything special.
