The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 219

The elevator was quiet, just Catherine and Adelina standing side by side as they headed down.

“Catherine, why haven’t you told anyone you’re pregnant?” Adelina finally asked.

Over the last few days, they’d been busy ironing out wedding details, and Adelina had seemed a little calmer. But she clearly still had questions and was looking for a chance to talk. She wanted to be honest, to talk about the baby Catherine was carrying.

Catherine could only guess what was going on in Adelina’s mind. She still hadn’t brought up the pregnancy in front of Lance, but Catherine was sure Adelina already knew.

“I just haven’t found the right moment,” Catherine replied.

Adelina stared at her own reflection in the shiny elevator wall, her expression hard to read. “Is it really that you haven’t found the right time, or are you just hiding it on purpose? As far as I know, you’re single. So whose baby is it?”

Catherine stayed silent for a few seconds, then lifted her head and looked straight at Adelina, her voice steady and calm. “You don’t need to worry. The baby has nothing to do with Lance.”

There was something so certain about the way she said it that Adelina relaxed a little. Still, she couldn’t shake her doubts. What if Catherine was just saying that to throw her off, secretly planning to have Lance’s child anyway?

The elevator doors slid open. A few coworkers were waiting in the hallway.

“Adelina, Catherine.”

“Adelina!” someone called out.

Adelina turned to greet them, her smile snapping into place like nothing was wrong. She chatted with everyone, acting completely at ease.

Catherine could sense her suspicion, though. She couldn’t help but let out a small, bitter smile as she watched Adelina walk away.

Adelina headed back to the office with coffee for Lance. Catherine handed out the other coffees and got to work.

For the next two days, Adelina showed up at the company every morning. She didn’t boss Catherine around the way she used to, but she watched her closely, like she was just waiting for Catherine to make a move on Lance.

Eventually, Catherine used her prenatal checkup as an excuse to take a day off. It was a relief to get away from Adelina’s constant watch.

She slipped out, pulling the door closed behind her.

Catherine lingered by the door, her back nearly against it, biting her lip as she looked at Harrell.

“Something on your mind?” he asked, flipping through her chart. He glanced up at her, then looked back down.

“No,” Catherine said quietly, taking a couple of steps closer.

“You’re over five months now. It’s time for a full anatomy scan,” Harrell said as he wrote out a referral. “We’ll do the usual ultrasound, and I’ll order some blood tests to check the baby’s development.”

He handed her the paperwork. “Take these to the front desk, pay, and then go up to the third floor for the tests.”

Catherine took the forms from him. “Thank you, Harrell.”

He noticed how tightly she was gripping the papers, her knuckles almost white. “You don’t have to thank me. I’m a doctor. Patient confidentiality is the most basic part of my job. My friendship with Lance comes second.”
