The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 222

“Okay, even if my reassurances aren’t helping, this is just a matter of probability. There’s still a really good chance everything will turn out fine.”

Lorinda could tell from Catherine’s silence that nothing she said was making a difference.

“I’ve never thought of myself as a lucky person.”

Catherine’s voice sounded shaky. She was fighting to keep her emotions in check, trying so hard to calm herself down.

“It’s fine, Lorinda. I’m hoping for the best, but I’m ready for the worst.”

If Catherine had let herself cry, Lorinda could have hugged her, maybe offered some comfort. But she was determined to stay strong.

Watching her, Lorinda’s heart ached. There was a stubborn look on Catherine’s face, a quiet strength that seemed to say, Don’t bother comforting me. It won’t help.

“Catherine, we can start now.” Harrell appeared in green scrubs, standing by the door and signaling her to come in.

The lights in the operating room were harsh. Everything was so quiet, it made Catherine’s heart race.

She lay down on the table and lifted her shirt, exposing her pale skin and the slight curve of her belly.

“You’re too thin,” Harrell said, glancing at her flat stomach. “You need to eat more.”

“Okay.” Catherine’s fingers twisted the edge of her shirt.

Harrell noticed how tense she was and gave her arm a light pat. “Try to relax. It’ll be alright.”

Catherine closed her eyes and felt a cool sensation spreading across her lower stomach...

Two hours later, Catherine went home with Lorinda.

“Take a few days off. Tell Lance I’m not feeling well, and you need to look after me.”

Lorinda didn’t give her a choice. She led her straight to the bedroom, tucked her in, and made sure she was comfortable under the blanket.

“I know Harrell’s a great doctor, but you can’t take any risks when it comes to the baby. Stay in bed for a couple days.”

Catherine grabbed her phone and messaged Lance to ask for time off.

Lorinda fell silent.

Over the years, lots of kids from the orphanage had tried to track down their birth parents. Some never found them. Some did, but after so long apart, there wasn’t any real bond left. Some kids had been abandoned, and when they finally found their families, it just hurt more. It was like reopening an old wound, not the comforting reunion they hoped for.

The two of them sat quietly. The only sound was Jasper’s slow, steady breathing.

Lance quickly approved Catherine’s leave request.

But Catherine knew the company was busy with a big project. Maybe Lance just didn’t want Adelina getting jealous every day.

Adelina wasn’t openly hostile anymore, but she still made a point of showing off how close she was to Lance. The whole executive floor felt tense, like everything was tinged with jealousy.

Harrell took a sample of Catherine’s amniotic fluid and ran a paternity test, comparing it with a blood sample from Lance.

Two days later, as soon as the results were in, Adelina rushed straight to the hospital to find him.
