Adelina just couldn’t wrap her head around it. Catherine wasn’t even carrying Lance’s baby, so why all the secrecy?
If it was Gavin’s kid…
Was Catherine really planning to have the baby in secret, hoping that would somehow buy her a way into The Main Family? The idea made Adelina scoff. A scandal like that would only drag the family name through the mud. Usually, families like theirs would do anything to keep things quiet, hand over a fat check, and tell the mother to disappear. The kind of money they tossed around without a second thought could set someone up for life.
Catherine was such a schemer. Adelina had no intention of letting her win.

With Lance out of the picture, Catherine’s workload piled up, but honestly, she felt lighter. Out of sight, out of mind. Still, there was always someone who didn’t get the memo.
The news that Lance had taken Adelina overseas spread like wildfire. Gavin, using some government project as a flimsy excuse, made a big scene showing up at SilverLeaf Industries to see her. He was the CEO of Golden Horizon Enterprises, so the front desk couldn’t exactly send him away. They called Aaron instead.
The moment Aaron heard who was in the lobby, he booked it to Catherine’s office. “Gavin is definitely here for you,” he whispered, looking a little exasperated.
Catherine barely had time to react. The elevator right in front of her desk slid open. Gavin strode out, dressed in a light gray suit with a pink shirt that screamed for attention, the top buttons undone like he was trying a little too hard. His hair was perfectly styled, not a strand out of place.
“Catherine,” he called out, eyes crinkling as he grinned, looking way too pleased with himself.
“Gavin,” Aaron greeted him quickly, then made himself scarce.
Gavin leaned on the edge of Catherine’s desk, watching Aaron leave. “Looks like Aaron’s gone, so I guess it’s just you and me to talk business.” He was clearly just playing around.
Catherine replied, “Let me take you downstairs. The project manager can fill you in.”
The secretarial staff nearby kept sneaking glances their way. Whatever Gavin wanted to say, this wasn’t the place. He followed Catherine downstairs without complaint.
On the seventeenth floor, Catherine’s old office was empty now, repurposed as a guest room. She led Gavin inside and reached for her phone to call the project manager.
“No, wait, I’m actually here to see you,” Gavin interrupted, stopping her from dialing. “I’ve got some insider info. Want to hear it?”
He looked so deflated, it was almost funny.
Catherine sighed. “If I listen, can I go?”
“I promise, once you hear this, you won’t want to leave,” Gavin replied, raising an eyebrow like he was about to drop a bombshell.
“Alright, talk.”
Gavin pulled a chair over and sat across from her. “Do you know why Adelina suddenly left the country for two years?” he asked, making it sound all mysterious.
Catherine shook her head. “No idea.”
“When Lance started college, he was kidnapped. Total fluke, but Adelina ended up saving him. She got really badly hurt, though, and spent years trying to recover here. Nothing helped, so she finally had to go abroad for treatment. That’s why she was gone for two years. She’s Lance’s lifesaver.”
