It was already eleven at night. Most of the lights in the apartment building had gone out, leaving Catherine’s place quiet and still. She was already in bed, just planning to chat with Aaron for a bit before falling asleep.
But then, Aaron said something that sent shockwaves through her calm.
Her mind buzzed. It was like a sharp pain shot straight through her head and made her ears ring.
“What did you just say?”
“I was the one who covered for you that time. Otherwise, how could Lance have no clue?”
Aaron had seen Catherine slip out before Lance left that night. He’d known right away that she wanted to pretend nothing happened.
So when Lance asked him the next day, “Did anyone come into my room?”
“No,” Aaron had replied without missing a beat. Then he added, “Last night, someone hacked the hotel’s internet and played a bunch of dirty videos. It woke up half the guests. Did it bother you?”
Dirty videos?
Lance was convinced that what he’d seen—the wild, heart-pounding scene from last night—was real. He remembered his hands gripping a woman’s waist...
“Aaron.” Catherine shot upright in bed, pressing her fingers into her forehead. Her heart was racing so hard she could barely breathe.
If word got out that she was pregnant, Aaron would be the first to realize the baby was Lance’s.
“Relax. I promise, I won’t tell anyone. It was just an accident, and I haven’t said a word to anybody.”
Aaron understood that Catherine wanted to keep things quiet. Lance and Adelina were about to get married, after all.
Still, Catherine’s brow was red from how hard she was pinching it. She just couldn’t calm down.
There really is no such thing as a secret that never gets out.
“I hope you can spend the rest of your life pretending none of this ever happened.”
That was all Catherine could say before she hung up, her voice tired and resigned.
The whole call had only lasted a few seconds, but she broke out in a cold sweat. When she lay back down, her long hair stuck to her forehead and cheeks. Her dark eyes glimmered in the darkness, full of restless worry.
Complicated was one way to put it, especially with Adelina involved.
Aaron thought about it from her perspective. If he were in Catherine’s shoes, he probably wouldn’t be calm either.
...
At the airport, things were just as tense.
Because Lance had left Adelina alone at Apex, Belinda and Sarah were the ones to pick her up when she flew back.
On the way, Belinda was still busy dealing with the fallout from the scandal. “Don’t worry. Catherine will definitely be fired. But if we do it right now, SilverLeaf Industries will look heartless. Just trust Lance. Let him handle it…”
A board member called to check on how things were being handled. After reassuring him several times, Belinda finally hung up.
She barely had a moment to breathe before Sarah’s phone rang. It was Daniel.
“As soon as you pick up Adelina, ask her why she started those rumors!”
