Amanda fussed with her wrinkled clothes, eyes shifting nervously.
“If you try to sue me, do you really think you can handle the person backing me? Let me tell you, he’s a big deal. He’s got connections at the hospital. You don’t want to mess with him.”
Catherine had already guessed Amanda wasn’t acting alone. She’d mentally run through the list of people who had ever donated to the orphanage, but none of them had the kind of pull it would take to make The Cabinda Hospital play along with such a scam.
“Go ahead, spill it. I want to know which loser is helping you pull off something this disgusting.”
Lorinda rolled up her sleeves and stood with her hands on her hips, glaring at Amanda.
But Amanda clammed up. “All I’m saying is, you don’t want to cross him. If you two know what’s good for you, you’ll leave right now.”
“Yeah, right. You absolute piece of garbage…”
Lorinda’s temper exploded, and she started cursing Amanda out, each insult worse than the last.
Suddenly, a voice called out from nearby. “You guys want to argue, fine, but do you have to start name-calling?”
Lorinda stopped mid-insult.
Catherine looked up and saw Gavin getting out of his car. His face was hard to read as he slowly walked over, avoiding her gaze.
“Just take her to the police. That solves everything. Why make it complicated?” he suggested.
Amanda’s expression flickered.
Lorinda let go of her hips and grabbed Amanda again. She didn’t actually care about Gavin’s opinion, but she felt awkward cursing in front of him. She just wanted to drag Amanda back inside, maybe give her one last chance.
But as soon as Lorinda touched her, Amanda bolted like a startled animal and darted behind Gavin.
“It was him! He’s the one who pulled strings at the hospital for me. He even got Patty a hospital room. Everyone there does what he says…”
“So you did all this to keep me from leaving Cabinda, just so you could watch it all play out yourself? Gavin, you really went all out.”
Of course Catherine saw through him. Her voice was icy, and her stare was even colder.
“No, it’s not like that. I only got involved halfway through. Let me explain…”
Gavin rushed to defend himself.
Amanda couldn’t bribe the whole hospital, but she managed to get to one pediatrician. Still, one doctor couldn’t do much. Their plan was to pretend Patty needed leukemia treatment, so the money for chemo would actually go to the hospital. Amanda could only pocket the cash for the surgery.
The child wasn’t actually getting chemo medicine, but she still had to get daily injections, which were painful.
Gavin stepped in to make sure Patty didn’t have to go through those real injections. He also worked his connections with other departments to make the medical reports look even more convincing.
