The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 282

Hundreds of thousands of dollars. That was all of her savings from the past few years, and somehow, she was supposed to just shrug it off like it was nothing?

But if that wasn’t the big deal, then was it the pregnancy?

Lance’s irritation was impossible to miss. Anyone watching might have thought Amanda had stolen his money, not hers.

Catherine caught her bottom lip between her teeth, hesitating for a second before she spoke. “A job transfer feels like a big thing. Have you made your decision yet, Lance?”

“You’re in a real hurry to get out of here, aren’t you?” Lance’s gaze was sharp, steady. “It’s like you’ve already made up your mind to leave. Like you have no other option.”

The silence grew heavy between them.

He was so blunt, so certain, Catherine couldn’t even deny it if she tried.

“Because I don’t have a reason to stay,” she said quietly, but there was no wavering in her voice. “Unless you think I haven’t already caused enough trouble for you and Adelina.”

Adelina had been keeping her distance lately, but Catherine knew better. Calm always came right before a storm. She was still the thorn in Adelina’s side, and it was only a matter of time before Adelina did something about it. If she stayed, she was just asking for more trouble.

Catherine could have come up with a dozen excuses.

Pregnancy wasn’t one of them.

Lance was still suspicious. Did he even believe she was really pregnant?

This woman, he thought, always hiding something. And the fact she was hiding something so obvious? It made him even more certain she was up to something.

“Catherine, are you keeping something from me?” he asked, his tone low and insistent. “I don’t like secrets. You’d better tell me the truth.”

Catherine felt her throat tighten, like it was stuffed with cotton. She met his eyes, her own gaze clear but flickering with nerves under his intense stare.

“I…”

Did he know? She’d braced herself for this moment, but now that it was here, panic crept in anyway.

The custody agreement… She couldn’t give the child the life he could. She’d lose.

She couldn’t shake the memory of him, showing up at her door late at night, knocking over and over.

Lance turned, his eyes narrow, watching Catherine as she walked away.

She kept her head high and walked straight toward Lorinda’s car. Lorinda saw her coming in the rearview mirror and started the engine, ready to leave.

The Rolls-Royce pulled out first, disappearing down the road in a trail of exhaust.

“What happened in there? You two looked like you were about to start a fight. He practically sped off just to get away from us,” Lorinda said as Catherine climbed in.

Catherine clicked her seatbelt. “Adelina’s mother is in the hospital.”

“Well, that’s serious,” Lorinda said, making a face. “The wedding’s soon. If something happened to Adelina’s mom, they’d have to postpone everything, right? But she’s so young. Hopefully, she’ll be okay.”

Catherine shook her head. “I’m not sure. I heard Sarah’s family has some kind of hereditary illness, but I don’t know the details.”

Not many people knew about the illness in Sarah’s family. Catherine only knew because Belinda had mentioned it once.

“So, what did he want from you?” Lorinda asked, stepping on the gas. “Was it about your job transfer? Any updates?”
