He never bothered with the wedding planning. He didn’t care about the dress either. If he was really busy at work, she could understand. She could wait. But if he had time for Catherine, why not for her?
“What if I want to move the wedding up?” she asked.
Lance barely looked at her. “Then keep wanting,” he said.
Adelina fell silent.
He put out his cigarette and flicked the butt aside, waving the smoke from his face. “Don’t stress yourself out. Go home,” he said, his eyes lingering on her red, swollen eyes for just a second.
He turned and walked to the elevator. She bit her lip as she watched him step inside. The doors slid shut, leaving her alone in the hallway.
She could only turn and head back to the hospital room.
Inside, Sarah was sitting up in bed, looking healthy and cheerful, showing Belinda a red bead bracelet in her hand.
“I went up the mountain a few days ago to pray for the kids’ marriage, you know. The master said there might be some bumps ahead and told me to buy this bracelet to protect us. Still, if we can move the wedding sooner, we should. I’ll feel better once it’s done.”
Belinda glanced at the bracelet. “How much did you pay for that?”
“Twenty-two thousand,” Sarah admitted, holding up two fingers.
Belinda’s face darkened. “Try not to waste your money on this kind of thing again.”
Sarah sighed. “I know, I know, but I can’t help worrying. The master said it and now I can’t stop thinking about it. The engagement party was already such a mess. What if something goes wrong at the wedding too?”
Just hearing about the engagement party made Belinda’s mood worse. That whole disaster had been Adelina’s fault anyway.
“That’s enough, Sarah. Lance never goes back on his word. The date is set. Stop fussing. Next time you pull something like this, I’m not stepping in to help.”
Belinda finished just as Adelina walked in. She stood up and straightened her bag. “Take care of your mom. Lance is busy. Don’t bother him with this kind of thing. If you have any ideas for the wedding, tell me. If I’m busy, I’ll have Sophia go with you.”
Adelina turned back to Sarah.
“So, Lance wouldn’t agree to move the wedding up?” Sarah could tell just by looking at her.
Adelina nodded.
“And Belinda wouldn’t budge either,” Sarah said with a sigh. “But she’s right. Lance keeps his promises. You two grew up together. You have history. What are you so worried about?”
Adelina hesitated, then sat down beside her mom. She leaned in and whispered a few words.
Sarah’s eyes went wide. She sucked in a sharp breath, looking like she might faint.
“Are you out of your mind?”
