Lance spoke the last four words slowly, each one landing heavy in the air.
Every syllable hit Catherine straight in the heart.
She kept her gaze low, eyes fixed on the movement of his Adam’s apple. The air between them felt charged, dangerous, and somehow impossible to escape.
She didn’t move, letting him lift her gently onto the bed. She bit her lip and waited, silent, hoping he would be the first to speak.
She needed to know how much he actually knew.
Even if he realized she was pregnant, she could always deny that the baby was his. No one would ever know what happened that night, as long as she kept her mouth shut.
Her hand, hanging at her side, clenched the edge of her shirt with all her strength.
“Aaron, wait outside.” Lance walked over to the window and leaned against the sill.
Aaron left and closed the door quietly behind him.
The room suddenly felt huge and silent. Catherine could hear her own heartbeat pounding in her ears. She kept her eyes down, waiting for Lance to say something.
“Last night, I drank too much,” Lance finally said, his gaze locked on her. “I lost control. You don’t have to take it so seriously.”
If he hadn’t brought it up, Catherine might have forgotten about it too. Any awkwardness she’d worried about seeing him again had already been pushed aside by the shock of him showing up as her “family member.”
Catherine just shook her head and stayed quiet.
Lance’s brow tightened, his dark eyes reflecting her delicate face.
She was upset, and he could see she didn’t want to talk to him.
Two years ago, their marriage had started because he was drunk. He’d married her out of a sense of responsibility.
Now they were divorced, and here he was, losing control again.
“You’ve been by my side for so long. You should know me. Last night—”
Catherine cut him off, her voice a little rushed. “Lance, I know you just thought I was Adelina. I really wasn’t bothered by it.”
If she truly wasn’t bothered, she wouldn’t have skipped work without a word. Even if she was sick, she should have called in. Especially now, with the look on her face.
Sophia walked in, pulling her phone out of her pocket and handing it to Catherine. “Catherine, why didn’t you tell anyone you were sick? If I hadn’t been here with Grandma for her checkup, I wouldn’t have been able to get you a room so quickly!”
Catherine looked up, surprised.
So the “James” family member was Sophia?
“How far along are your tests? Grandma had something to deal with, so I didn’t get a chance to hear what the nurse said about you. I just got you settled and left. It’s nothing serious, right?” Sophia picked up the chart from the bedside table and started to open it.
Catherine grabbed it back right away. “It’s just a fever from a cold. I’ll be fine after a couple days of IV drips. No need for more tests.”
Inside the chart was her pregnancy diagnosis.
She had no idea how Lance found out she was at the hospital, but from the looks of it, he’d just arrived and still didn’t know a thing.
And Sophia, after getting her admitted, had gone right back to help Fiona.
“Have you just been working too hard lately? Burned yourself out?” Sophia sat on the edge of the bed, looked Catherine over, then turned and glared at Lance. “And you. Do you really expect people to be made of steel? You can’t just run your staff into the ground like this!”
