The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 298

Lance picked up his glass, his fingers effortlessly tracing the smooth surface as if searching for an answer. His Adam's apple moved, but he didn't say a word. He just tipped his head back and finished the drink in one long swallow.

The room went completely silent.

Then suddenly, noise spilled in from the hallway. Voices, laughter, the sound of people who didn’t care who overheard.

"This time, Lance really did it to himself. The board's annoyed, and The Green Family's pissed too. I can't wait to see how he gets out of this mess."

Gavin's voice carried through, smug as ever. "Just wait. The real drama hasn't even started. That secretary of his—"

The rest of his words faded as the group moved away. Whatever else he said was lost in the noise.

Lance promoting Catherine to general manager had rocked the whole business circle. It was all anyone wanted to talk about lately, and the gossip never seemed to die down.

Harrell glanced over, replaying Gavin’s words in his mind. He broke the silence with a quiet observation. "Gavin’s been keeping his head down lately."

Lance’s eyes darkened. "He’s too busy going on blind dates to stir up trouble."

Harrell just nodded. That was all either of them needed to say. The two men kept drinking, quietly matching each other, glass for glass.

By the time they left, Harrell could barely sit straight on the sofa, his limbs tangled. Lance slung an arm under his shoulder and helped him out of the club.

They were waiting by the curb when Gavin and his crew stumbled out. Gavin looked wasted, barely managing to stay upright with the help of his friends.

But when he spotted Lance, something sharpened in his eyes. He shoved off the guys holding him up and staggered over, ignoring everyone’s attempts to hold him back.

"Lance!"

Gavin swayed and pointed at a spot near Lance, his voice slurred. "Why are you wobbling? Is it because you get weak in the knees when you see me?"

The two guys picking Gavin up were taller than him, so his feet dangled as they hauled him away. He flailed, yelling, "Hey, hey, why am I flying?"

Just then, Aaron pulled up in the car. Lance stubbed his cigarette out in the trash, helped Harrell into the back seat, and got into the passenger side.

"Where to, Lance?" Aaron asked, glancing in the mirror.

Lance pinched the bridge of his nose and leaned back with his eyes closed. "Take us to my place."

"Got it," Aaron replied.

Not far away, Gavin was being bundled into his own car. As soon as he got in, he fumbled for his phone and made a call.

"Catherine, I’m sorry, okay? I really owe you an apology. I wasn’t trying to make fun of you, just Lance. Did you know, the first day you left, Lance came to the bar in the middle of the night just to drown his sorrows…"
