Aaron jumped in again. “Adelina, Lance wants you to send me the photos, and the IP address they came from.”
“Okay, will do.”
Whatever had happened between Lance and Catherine in Eldervale, it was obvious someone had taken those pictures on purpose and sent them to her just to cause trouble between her and Lance.
Adelina had already messed things up for Lance once. She couldn’t let it happen again.
Aaron got the photos and shot back a quick “OK” before launching right into the investigation. Since he already knew where to start looking, finding leads wasn’t hard at all.
Once everything was set, Lance got up and headed to Catherine’s office.
“Lance, are we starting the meeting?” Catherine called out. Her office door was wide open. She stood and came around her desk as he walked in.
Lance stopped next to her, tapping his fingers twice on her desk.
“Someone took pictures of us. I don’t know if they’re going to leak them, so you might want to give Lewis a heads up.”
If things got ugly, whoever had those photos could easily send them to the press. Lance wasn’t too worried about himself. It was Catherine he was thinking about.
Catherine froze for a second.
“Oh, it’s fine. He…”
She almost said Lewis wouldn’t believe that kind of thing, but then realized this might be the perfect time to bring up their breakup.
“I…”
She hesitated, unsure what to say.
“What’s wrong?” Lance’s brow creased. “Did you two fight?”
“No!” Catherine shook her head quickly. “I already… explained everything to Lewis.”
She’d almost said they broke up, but at the last second changed it to “explained.” Lowering her head, she tried to hide the frustration in her eyes.
Lance looked at her, unsure if he should apologize for dragging her into this, or just say something nice about Lewis being so chill.
Before Ivan could reply, Lance and Catherine walked into the meeting room together.
All the execs stood up to greet them.
“Lance, Catherine…”
“Lance, Catherine!”
At the head of the table, two chairs were set out. The center seat, and one just to the left. Lance took the main chair, and Catherine sat next to him only after he was settled.
“I heard there’s been some trouble at the branch lately,” Lance said, crossing his legs so his knee was right up against Catherine’s chair. His whole body was angled toward her.
Everyone in the room got the message loud and clear. Anyone who tried to throw Catherine under the bus was done for.
But Ivan wasn’t scared. He’d just gotten Ingram’s promise that he’d be protected.
“Lance, everyone knows Catherine’s been with you for years. But at the end of the day, she’s just a woman. She’s short-sighted, and she hasn’t learned even a tenth of your skills. Making her the general manager of this branch… it’s really not a good idea.”
