The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 36

Over the past six months, the Green family’s fortune had soared, and now it felt like they were at the top of the world.

Catherine drove home, tossed a couple of bags together, and headed straight to the orphanage. She planned to stay there for the next few days, just to keep an eye on the kids and help out where she could.

The place was small, only five or six rooms, with a little more than a dozen children living there. Almost every one of them had some kind of illness, so covering their medical expenses was always a struggle. Donations from kindhearted people barely kept up with daily costs. Catherine and Lorinda usually ended up paying most of the medical bills themselves. Amanda, who ran the place, tried to earn a bit more by making crafts, but it never amounted to much.

Catherine brought snacks for the kids and jumped in to help Amanda with whatever needed doing.

“Amanda, I heard from Lorinda that you and she are planning to move away after the New Year? Is that true?” Amanda asked carefully, her voice full of concern.

Since Catherine had left the orphanage, she only came by at set times to help out and drop off money. She never talked about her own life. Amanda didn’t even know Catherine had married Lance or that she was pregnant now.

“Yeah, it’s true. There are better opportunities out there, so Lorinda and I are thinking of leaving Cabinda. But don’t worry. We’ll still send money back every month, and we’ll come visit for the holidays,” Catherine said.

Amanda let out a breath she’d been holding. “That’s good…”

She gave a small, embarrassed smile. “It’s not that I don’t trust you. I just worry. What if things don’t work out? If you can’t earn money somewhere else, what happens to all these kids?”

“Don’t worry. Lorinda and I have it all figured out. We’d never just abandon the kids,” Catherine reassured her.

Over the years, Catherine had saved up enough money to feel safe making this leap. Otherwise, she would never have quit her job and decided to have a baby.

“Do you really have to go?” Amanda pressed, still not giving up. “Do you know where yet?”

“We haven’t decided,” Catherine replied with a gentle smile. “But we’ll tell you as soon as we know.”

Amanda didn’t ask again, though her face showed she wasn’t happy about it.

A little later, Amanda handed Catherine a pile of dirty laundry.

Amanda frowned and looked like she wanted to complain, but one glance at the money made her bite back whatever she was about to say.

“Lorinda’s not coming back this year, and now you’re leaving too. I guess I can’t count on either of you anymore…”

She wiped her hands and started counting the money, bill by bill.

Catherine slipped out before Amanda could finish.

Azure Heights was the flashiest, most expensive club in downtown Cabinda.

Catherine had only been there once before, with Lance. That night, he’d gotten drunk, and they’d ended up sleeping together.

By eight o’clock, the city’s nightlife was in full swing. Neon lights flashed everywhere, and the music was so loud it felt like it could split her head open. Catherine pressed her hands over her ears and wandered around the lobby, searching for Gavin. It took a while, but finally, she spotted him.
