“Don’t let Lewis show his face in the business circle again.”
Was he calling Aaron?
Catherine reached up, grabbing his arm, desperately trying to get the phone from him. Lance just lifted his arm higher. She stretched as far as she could, even tiptoeing, but she still couldn’t reach.
“He’s irresponsible, Catherine. Why are you so determined to protect him? I thought you hated being abandoned more than anything.”
She had never said it out loud, but it was true. She hated being left behind. Every kid at the orphanage was there because someone had abandoned them. She was no different.
Catherine’s fingernails dug into his wrist, leaving angry red marks behind. She bit down hard on her lower lip, still refusing to admit that the baby wasn’t Lewis’s.
Lance was the type of man who lived by his principles. He had zero tolerance for lies. He hadn’t even forgiven Adelina, his childhood friend and almost fiancée. There was no way he’d let a subordinate like Catherine deceive him, not even over something personal.
Even if it wasn’t about work, he wouldn’t let it slide.
“Why aren’t you saying anything?” Lance’s voice was cold, his eyes burning with anger as he let the harsh words fly. “When you were Mrs. James, you always made sure to use protection, didn’t you?”
She hadn’t wanted his child, even though they were married. So why did she seem so eager to have one with another man?
Just picturing Catherine with someone else, her body arching, those soft sounds meant for a man who wasn’t him... It made the jealousy twist inside him, hotter and sharper.
Catherine flushed, half with anger, half with humiliation.
“I just didn’t want your child! You’re not good to me. You’re never gentle or thoughtful. You always have that cold look, like the whole world owes you a fortune.”
Lance’s stare turned icy, his jaw tight. A vein pulsed at his temple as he struggled to keep his temper in check.
Lance’s jaw was sharp and tense, his eyes dark and unreadable, like there was a storm hidden inside him.
“Of course.”
Catherine finally felt her heart settle. She was about to say something else, something polite to patch things up after her outburst.
Then Lance spoke again. “The baby isn’t his anyway. I know the truth.”
Catherine’s eyes went wide. For a second, she stared at him in shock.
Then it hit her. Lance must have already confronted Lewis, and Lewis had probably tried to explain everything. Now Lance was just testing her, waiting to see if she’d finally admit the truth.
By refusing to say anything, she’d told him everything he needed to know—she’d been hiding it from him all along.
