Catherine was practically untouchable at the company, just one step below the boss.
Shirley had never even dared to imagine she could take over Catherine’s position.
But now, with Adelina supporting her—the soon-to-be lady of the company—everything felt possible.
“Adelina, seriously, you don’t have to worry about a thing. From now on, I’ll do whatever you say. I’ll keep a close eye on Lance for you. I won’t let any other woman get near him… Actually, I know Lance only cares about you, and even if other women throw themselves at him, he wouldn’t notice. Still, it must get annoying. I’ll take care of it so he has more time for you.”
That was exactly what Adelina wanted to hear.
Adelina handed her the termination papers. “Alright then, you’re with me now. Tomorrow, when Catherine comes in, give this to her. Make sure she signs it and leaves.”
“Absolutely!” Shirley took the papers, barely able to wait for tomorrow.
...
The Cabinda Restaurant, top floor, private luxury suite.
Lance and Adelina showed up late.
As soon as they walked in, Belinda started in on them. “You knew we were having dinner with Daniel and Sarah tonight. You couldn’t have come a little earlier?”
Sarah, Adelina’s mom, stepped in to smooth things over. “Young people are busy with work, it’s normal. We’re all family here, there’s no need to be so formal. Besides, Adelina was late too. Why aren’t you saying anything to her?”
“Adelina was with him. He’s probably the reason they were late,” Belinda shot back, then looked at Lance again. “Daniel and Sarah insisted on waiting for you before we ordered.”
“No need to wait on my account,” Lance said as he pulled out a chair and sat down. He pulled out the chair next to him for Adelina too.
Adelina took the seat beside him and greeted Belinda and Garrison.
“Sorry for making you wait, Garrison, Belinda.”
Garrison nodded back, quiet as ever.
Everyone at the table understood what was really going on. Lance clearly wasn’t eager to get engaged.
The rest of dinner went by without anyone mentioning the engagement again.
Afterwards, everyone went their separate ways.
Belinda didn’t even wait to get home before confronting Lance.
“This engagement has been on hold forever. What are you really thinking?” she demanded.
Lance kept his eyes on the road, his face unreadable. “I’ve told you before. Please stay out of it.”
“Aren’t the Greens getting anxious? The rumors about you and Adelina are everywhere. If you don’t get engaged soon, it’s going to hurt her reputation. Who knows what people will start saying?”
The rumors about their engagement had been around since before the new year. Tons of people were waiting for them to finally set a date. Every time Belinda went to a social event, someone asked about it. With Lance refusing to give a straight answer, she could only make excuses, which made it seem like she was the one who didn’t approve of the engagement.
