The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 514

“Oh, please.” Lorinda was practically seething, her chest rising and falling with frustration. “Gavin, you’re just messing with me on purpose, aren’t you?”

“I never said that, and I didn’t do anything. You’re the one picking a fight,” Gavin shot back.

Gavin moved over to stand by Catherine and, almost absentmindedly, brushed her shoulder. He lowered his voice, almost too soft for anyone else to hear. “But some of what I just said... I meant it.”

Some? He’d said so much just now. Which part was he actually serious about?

Catherine didn’t get a chance to figure it out. Lorinda snatched a plush toy and tossed it straight at Gavin.

“That’s what you get for trying to compete with me…”

Gavin ducked and dodged, zipping around the room, barely avoiding the soft assault. He looked so ridiculous that even Catherine had to stifle a laugh.

She stepped between them, arms out like a referee. “Alright, enough. You’re going to scare the kids.”

Alexander White was sound asleep, completely unbothered, but Jasper was sitting on the playmat, staring up at them, his little lips trembling like he was about to burst into tears.

Lorinda finally spotted Jasper’s nervous little face and sighed. “I don’t care, Catherine.”

She bent down, scooped Jasper up, and came back to Catherine’s side. “We’re always going to be best friends, and our kids will grow up to be the best brothers, no matter what happens.”

“They will,” Catherine said, almost on autopilot.

Lorinda was instantly unhappy. “What’s with ‘they will’? You should say ‘of course.’ We grew up together. Our sons are barely a year apart. Nothing and nobody is going to mess up our friendship.”

Catherine thought Lorinda was saying all this to get back at Gavin, and she hadn’t realized how much it really meant. Her automatic reply seemed to make things more tense.

“Of course. No matter what, we’ll always be best friends. And they’ll always be the best brothers, too.”

Lorinda nodded hard, locking eyes with Catherine for a long moment. The whole mood changed, going tense and serious.
