The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 562

Upstairs in Lance’s room, Lanny was fast asleep in Catherine’s arms.

Lance gently laid Catherine down onto the bed. Careful not to disturb the sleeping child, she shifted to her side and nestled Lanny close beside her. Then, quietly, Catherine slipped to the edge of the bed and sat down. “I gave the package to Geoffrey,” she said in a low voice.

Lance, lounging at the foot of the bed on the sofa, looked up. “What did he say to you?”

“He told me to thank you.”

“And did he say anything about you?”

Catherine shook her head, unwilling to repeat what Davis had said.

“You didn’t see Lorinda?” Lance pressed.

“I did, sort of. We just didn’t get a chance to talk alone.” Disappointment crept into Catherine’s features; her eyes clouded with sadness.

Lance crossed his legs and stretched an arm along the back of the sofa. “The Lees want to take Lorinda abroad—give her a fresh start away from all the family squabbles. But she refuses. Do you know why she won’t go?”

“I do,” Catherine replied softly. “Part of it is because of me.” The weight of guilt settled even heavier on her shoulders.

Lance dropped his arm to his lap and laced his fingers together. “There’s more to it. Davis still controls a chunk of Lee Group shares. Geoffrey won’t let him leave unless he hands them all over. But if Davis gives up his stake, he loses the dividends—his only source of income. Bottom line: between Davis and Geoffrey, only one of them is coming out of this alive.”

The color drained from Catherine’s face.

“And you being Geoffrey’s daughter? After today, everyone will know. The fight ahead isn’t going to be easy. As for your issues with Lorinda, that’s something you’ll have to put aside until this battle is over. Until then, mourning and regrets are a waste of energy.” Maybe, as the feud between Davis and Geoffrey escalated, Catherine and Lorinda’s allegiances would shift with the tide. Their relationship would keep changing as the situation evolved.

“The priority now is Geoffrey,” Lance said, his voice steady. “And orphanage Amanda—she’s an important piece on the board, and Gavin has her.”

On the line, Harrell answered, “Yeah, I saw her—but she was busy the whole time, and Adela was glued to her side. I couldn’t get a second alone with her.”

Lance’s reply was mild. “She didn’t invite you just to make up the numbers. Just wait.”

Harrell chuckled. “You really do call it every time, Lance. Just now she messaged me—she wants to talk after the party.”

“Then don’t call me until you’ve heard her out. Unless it’s important, keep the phone quiet.”

Lance sounded irked, ready to hang up.

Harrell joked, “You used to tell me not to call because it would distract you from work. What is it now—afraid I’ll wake the baby? Come on, Lance, you’re a CEO, not a stay-at-home dad playing house with your wife and kid.”
