The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 574

If she ever found out that Adelina’s condition was nothing but a farce, that this whole tragedy was a lie, she’d probably bring down the entire Green family herself.

Sarah would never, ever admit that Adelina was actually fine.

“Belinda, that’s not something I care to hear,” Sarah shot back, her tone shrill and indignant. “Are you trying to use money to compensate for what Adelina’s been through? The Green family may not have the James family’s wealth, but we’re hardly destitute. Do you have any idea how much scrutiny and pain she’ll face for the rest of her life? Let’s be honest here: she’s in love with Lance. Who wouldn’t be, with a man like him? She’ll never be able to have children of her own—can’t she at least have happiness in love? Is that really asking too much?”

Belinda stared, barely containing her annoyance at Sarah’s self-righteousness. “Do you even hear yourself? She chose to save Lance. No one forced her! You’re the selfish one—and you raised your daughter to be just the same. If we’d known you’d make demands like this, we would never have needed her help in the first place. Lance wasn’t going to die!”

“Oh, look who’s talking! You’re the unreasonable one. So domineering and impossible!”

Sarah shot to her feet in a sudden outburst. “Belinda! That’s so heartless, it chills me to the bone. Your son is safe and sound, but my daughter—my daughter—”

Whether from genuine indignation or simply because the moment called for it, tears rolled down Sarah’s cheeks, and she wailed as though her heart were about to break.

“I should have known—blood is blood, and you’ll never truly care for another woman’s child. You’ve had Adelina all these years, but you don’t feel a shred of pity for her…”

Sarah’s sobbing gave Belinda an instant headache.

“Why didn’t you tell us?” Belinda’s voice edged on accusation. “That Harrell… he’s a good kid.”

Guilt flashed across her face. All these years she’d kept Harrell at arm’s length because of his father. She hadn’t even wanted Lance hanging around him.

Lance said, “He was worried you’d unconsciously go easy on the Lane family in business if you knew. The Lane family’s barely kept afloat for years. If you found out Harrell had saved me, you’d step in to help them without realizing it. One favor would lead to another, and the Lane family isn’t stupid—they’d catch on that we were lending a hand and seize the chance to draw closer.”

Sarah wasn’t ready to let go. “Harrell may have been there, but did Adelina help you or not?” she demanded, steering the conversation back around. “She helped, and she got hurt! That’s the truth. I know your family’s big and powerful; I don’t expect you to let the James name end with you. Lance was married to Catherine, and now she’s had his child. Adelina’s known all along and has never made a fuss. The James family needs an heir, and we wouldn’t object to you bringing Catherine’s child into your home to be raised as Adelina’s own.. Wouldn’t that make everyone happy, solve all your problems at once?”
