For Gavin, the money meant nothing. But for Catherine, it was no small sum—and she couldn’t just accept such a big favor from him without a reason.
Catherine turned her attention to Aaron, messaging: Think of a compromise—something that’ll get Amanda banned from the casino for good, but won’t break the bank. Biggest results, minimal cost. Aaron promised he’d wrack his brains for a solution.
But Gavin wasn’t about to drop the issue of repayment. He started peppering her with texts.
[Catherine, you’ve got to be kidding me. You’ll bend over backwards with your ex, Lance, but when it’s me, you have to pay back every last cent?]
[Just admit it. The spark’s long gone!]
Catherine: [There never was a spark.]
Her blunt honesty must have hit a nerve, because Gavin’s response became even more melodramatic.
[How cold-hearted! You have no idea how many sleepless nights I’ve spent carrying the secret that you were pregnant with Lance’s child!]
[If I weren’t so tight-lipped, he’d have found out ages ago!]
[Don’t push me, Catherine. If you keep this up, I just might go tell Lance the truth—that Lanny is his!]
He made a lot of noise, but Catherine knew he’d never really go through with it. Sometimes she wondered if Gavin was immature or just hopelessly dramatic. She paused for a moment, then couldn’t help but laugh.
Susan grinned. “Since you left, I’ve tried to recreate them over and over, but something’s always missing. This time, I want the real thing.” She turned to Alexa. “And you—once we’re done, you have to try some. Catherine’s pork chops are the stuff of legend.”
Susan, who was more than ten years older than Alexa, had a warmth that put everyone at ease. Alexa smiled, genuinely happy to be included. “Well then, I’m in for a real treat, thanks to Lance.”
Still, Catherine found herself glancing up the stairs. Why on earth would Lance just grab the baby and take off like that? If she didn’t know him so well—if she didn’t know what kind of man he truly was—someone might think he intended to hurt him.
“Relax, Catherine. The baby’s safe with Lance,” Susan reassured her, sensing her hesitation. “Come on, we need you in the kitchen.”
Alexa chimed in, echoing Susan’s words. “Seriously, Lance dotes on Lanny. He’s completely devoted.”
