The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 66

Josh got up and left with his team.

Catherine dove back into her work, but only managed a few minutes of peace before Josh reappeared.

“Catherine, you’ve been working so hard. I ordered you some lunch.”

“Thank you.” She stood up and accepted the food with both hands. “Honestly, I thought I was going to starve today.”

She was anxious to double-check every detail, just in case Lance showed up out of nowhere and set her behind.

Josh pulled a bottle of soy milk out of his pocket and handed it to her. “No need to rush. The media just caught Lance and Adelina having lunch at some fancy place. They won’t be back anytime soon.”

“Thanks.” Catherine took the soy milk, but her voice sounded a little flat, even to her own ears.

Josh set the food down and left. The office suddenly felt huge and empty, just her and that big, quiet space. Only the light above the door was on, casting a pool of brightness over her and the empty seat at the head of the table.

Her eyes lingered on that chair for a moment before she forced herself to look away and focus on her work.

For the past six months, there had been a nonstop stream of news about Lance and Adelina. Every time they were spotted together, it blew up online. People couldn’t seem to get enough of them.

That afternoon, Lance never made it back to the office.

At three, Catherine had no choice but to call him about a document that needed his approval. The phone rang seven or eight times. Just when she thought it would go to voicemail, he finally picked up.

“What is it?” Lance’s voice was low and smooth.

Catherine got straight to the point. “I sent a document to your email. Could you review it? If it looks good, I’ll stamp it and move forward.”

Before Lance could answer, Adelina’s voice chimed in.

“Lance, you said you’d spend the afternoon with me. Why are you on the phone again?”

“It’s work,” Lance replied.

Adelina let out an impatient sigh. “Isn’t that what Catherine’s for?”

A red sports car was parked by the curb, bold and impossible to miss under the streetlights.

Gavin got out of the car, grinning as he walked toward her.

She stopped and watched him come closer. “Gavin, you’re just in time.”

She pulled a sealed envelope out of her briefcase and held it out.

“A love letter?” Gavin glanced at it and raised an eyebrow, but didn’t take it.

Catherine nodded. “Yeah, a love letter.”

Gavin just laughed. “You’re kidding. There’s cash in there.”

The shoes she’d bought came to less than a thousand. It was pocket change for Gavin, but Catherine couldn’t let herself owe him, not even a little. She’d been thinking about this all day, and made sure to have the money ready, just in case she saw him. She hadn’t expected it to happen so soon.

“I’ll take it if you want, but you have to unblock me first,” Gavin said, quick to bargain.
