“Honestly, Catherine is just a secretary. Are we really making this much fuss over her? Who’s actually pulling the strings here?”
Lance’s eyes were dark and unreadable, calm on the surface but full of undercurrents. “The company’s a mess right now, and the whole James family is on edge.”
Sophia immediately went quiet and slipped over to sit next to Fiona without another word.
Belinda, caught off guard by his response, was left speechless. She just stared, not knowing what to say.
“I won’t be coming home for a while. The family dinner this weekend is off.”
Lance pushed away his breakfast, got up, grabbed his coat from the entryway, and walked out the door.
The cold wind outside hit him hard, but it did nothing to calm the restless frustration swirling inside him.

Two hours later at SilverLeaf Industries.
Catherine came into work, arms full of organized files, and walked into Lance’s office.
Right on top was a signed resignation letter.
She turned to leave but stopped in her tracks when she saw Lance standing in the doorway to the break room.
He’d just showered and changed into a crisp white shirt. As he buttoned the collar and rolled up his sleeves, he walked over to his desk.
“Make me some coffee.”
His voice was deep and smooth, but there was a pause at the end. He’d seen the resignation letter.
Catherine just stood there, watching him.
He grabbed the letter, tore it cleanly in half, and tossed it in the trash. Only then did she turn to head out and make his coffee.
But she wasn’t ready to give up. She printed out a stack of resignation letters, handing them to him whenever she could.
Daniel only cared about results. “Who cares about being invisible? As long as she marries into the James family, that’s all that matters. Just get them together, get her pregnant, and everything will be fine.”
Sarah gave him a smack on the shoulder. “What are you saying? She needs to have some self-respect...”
Adelina fidgeted, her face filled with guilt. She didn’t dare respond.
She couldn’t even look at her parents, just bit her lip in silence.
Sarah pushed Daniel off the couch and made him go upstairs. “You’d be better off putting your energy into Lance instead of nagging us! You’re all so short-sighted.”
“Is that any way to talk to your child? Adelina, don’t listen to your father,” Sarah said, sitting close to her. “Men are all the same... Especially someone like Lance. You can’t keep him with a baby. You need to deal with the people around him first...”
Adelina leaned on her mom’s shoulder, hiding her uneasy expression.

“Catherine, have you put on some weight?”
