The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 87

"It's okay. Your health matters most."

Gavin leaned against the doorframe, giving her a bright, carefree smile.

Of course, it was easy for him to say that. The later Catherine got up, the more work she missed, and that only helped him.

"Gavin." Now that she could see him clearly, Catherine’s voice was still a little tense. "Did you need something?"

He shook his head and flicked his hair. "Come on, let's grab some lunch."

Catherine shook her head. "I can't. I’m busy."

She glanced across the hall, her eyes lingering on the closed door. Had Lance already gone to take care of work?

"You’re not busy," Gavin said, gesturing carelessly toward the other room. "Lance is still lost in his little daydream. He ordered two steaks for lunch, having them brought up."

Just like that, the tension in Catherine’s chest loosened.

Her grip on the doorknob tightened, her expression falling a little. "Then I’ll just go back to bed."

She started to close the door, but Gavin stuck his foot in the way. "Don’t even think about it. He probably wore Adelina out so she can't get out of bed, which is why they’re eating upstairs. But that doesn’t mean he’s skipping work today."

If anyone could twist the knife, it was Gavin.

"Just get ready and come downstairs with me. If Lance needs you for work, you’ll still be close by. Nothing wasted."

Catherine’s refusal caught in her throat. Suddenly, she looked past Gavin, eyes wide. "Lance."

Gavin whipped around.

No one was there. The hallway was empty.

With a sharp click, Catherine shut the door.

"You’ve been hanging around Lance too long... now you’re picking up all his bad habits..." Gavin’s voice drifted in, half amused, half annoyed.

Catherine crawled back into bed and reached for her phone. Still no messages from Lance.

Gavin’s words wouldn't leave her mind. Her chest tightened, and she rolled over, face buried in the pillow, trying to force herself back to sleep.

Gavin didn’t push it. He called her name a couple more times, then gave up and left.

Soon after, there was a soft knock outside. Not her door, but the one across the hall.

Gavin and Adelina were attractive in their own right, but next to Lance, they seemed to fade into the background.

Wasn’t he supposed to be in his room having lunch with Adelina?

Catherine hesitated, then walked over to their table.

She could already sense the tension between the three of them, so she planned to just say hi and leave.

But as soon as she got close, Gavin pulled out the chair next to him. "Sit."

"I don’t want to interrupt you guys. I just wanted to ask about the plans for this afternoon." Catherine stayed standing, her gaze low.

Gavin draped his arm lazily over the back of the chair, smirking. "So I’m the third wheel now?"

"Of course not," Catherine said, not really sure how to respond to him most days.

Adelina suddenly laughed. "Honestly, it sounds like she wants you to come with her so they can eat alone."

She leaned in toward Lance, her voice teasing. "Looks like Gavin is pretty interested in Catherine."

Gavin grinned, watching Lance for his reaction even though he was talking to Catherine.
